The patrician facade of my grandfather’s house (where three generations lived in four cramped apartments) was further enhanced by the television set he put in the window.
In 1948, it was the first on the block, and all the neighbors were invited up to the porch to watch.

This calligraphic illustration was created by Baudouin van Horicke, a 17th-century writing master and instructor connected to the court of the Spanish Hapsburg archdukes in Brussels. During the late 16th- and early 17th-centuries, the calligraphic arts flourished in the Low Countries, as artists like Horicke developed and refined the ornamental scripts increasingly in demand by members of the growing legal, merchant, and educated classes.
