Good evening Boston!! On March 5, 1770, British soldiers killed five colonists and injured six. This would become a defining moment of the Revolutionary movement, and shortly after, a propaganda battle ensued between the colonists and the British. Paul Revere famously portrayed the incident in Boston magazines, where the Old State House can be seen in the background. Six years later, on July 18, 1776, Colonel Thomas Crafts read the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House. Along with this proclamation, every Boston newspaper printed the document the same day. #history #boston #massachusetts . . . . . . . #bostondotcom #igboston #igersboston #followingboston #ignewengland #bostonusa #igersusa #igboston617 #igersboston25 #followingnbc10boston #boston25 #newengland_igers #bostonhistory #bostonmassacre #declarationofindependence

In the summer of 1913, four suffragists rode this yellow-and-black wagon from New York to Boston. Their goal: get folks excited about woman suffrage. Which slogans stand out to you? ️ The wagon was discovered a year before on the property of Lucy Stone, a lifelong champion of women's rights. During her lifetime, Stone co-founded the American Woman Suffrage Association and served as the editor of "The Woman's Journal." From August to September, four women—Elisabeth Freeman, Ida Craft, Elsie MacKenzie, and Vera Wentworth—traveled north with the wagon. Their journey was followed closely in "The Woman's Journal," which described how the suffragists spent their days "playing the hurdy-gurdy to collect a crowd, making suffrage speeches, selling The Woman's Journal, selling banners and pennants, hat bands and buttons and taking collections." (Swipe above to see a photo of the suffragists in action, courtesy of @librarycongress). Are the tactics suffragists used to fight for the right to vote still effective today? That's the question we'll be exploring next Tuesday, May 21, during our National Youth Suffrage, and you can join us! The summit is a free, 1-hour, online program. Our speakers include @doloreshuerta, @naomiwadler, @pageharrington, and Caty Borum Chattoo. I never miss an opportunity to visit a library. There is just something so special about historic libraries and this one, the Boston Athenaeum, is the oldest independent library in the US! The admission cost was a little high for only seeing a few rooms on the first floor, but I am always willing to support the cause! The address is 10 1/2 Beacon Street because it originally didn’t have a street address and they had to add one later. Check it out next time you are in Boston! #bostonathenaeum #travel #explore #skimmreads

. . Boston , 18 aprile 2019 . Bunker Hill Monument . The Bunker Hill Monument was erected to commemorate the Battle of Bunker Hill, which was among the first major battles between British and Patriot forces in the American Revolutionary War, fought there June 17, 1775. The 221-foot (67 m) granite obelisk was erected between 1825 and 1843 in Charlestown, Massachusetts, with granite from nearby Quincy conveyed to the site via the purpose-built Granite Railway, followed by a trip by barge. There are 294 steps to the top. An exhibit lodge built adjacent to the monument in the late 19th century houses a statue of fallen hero Dr. Joseph Warren. Bunker Hill is one of the sites along the Freedom Trail and is part of Boston National Historical Park.
