May is Borderline Personality Disorder awareness month. Each day of the month I'll share a fact about BPD. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Day 6:
What is 'Splitting'? Splitting is a term used in psychiatry to describe the inability to hold opposing thoughts, feelings, or beliefs. Some might say that a person who splits sees the world in terms of black or white, all or nothing. It's a distorted way of thinking in which the positive or negative attributes of a person or event are neither weighed nor cohesive
Splitting is considered a defense mechanism by which people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can view people, events, or even themselves in all or nothing terms. Splitting allows them to readily discard things they have assigned as "bad" and to embrace things they consider "good," even if those things are harmful or risky. Splitting is one of the nine criteria used to diagnose BPD.-- The Very Well Mind

Splitting is very common amongst the BPD community. Someone with BPD may split with someone after an argument, they may view this person as all 'bad' which can lead to ending a relationship abruptly. When someone comes out of the 'split' they may realise that the person isn't all 'bad' and try to initiate a relationship again. This contributes to having unstable relationships.
People with BPD are known to have a very black and white thinking pattern. Splitting is usually done subconsciously but someone can be aware that they are splitting if they're aware of their symptoms.
Splitting is usually a very intense feeling. It's used as a coping mechanism to prevent feelings of hurt, upset or emotional pain. Anger usually accompanies a black 'split'. If someone with BPD splits a person 'black' it means they view them as all bad. If they split them 'white' it means that they only see the good. Being split white is just as dangerous because it can cause the person with BPD to have unreasonable expectations of that person. When these expectations are not met it may cause emotional pain and the possibility of being split 'black' which may cause anger
