Would you like to learn about my essay for this semester of graduate school? . My 3rd semester requires a 10-page (minimum) critical essay. I had the freedom of choosing my topic, with my professor's approval. In January, we decided upon a deadline schedule, with an initial submission of a 3- to 5-page draft that included my thesis statement & rough evidence to support my thesis. I had 4 weeks to do the research, determine my direction, & write the first 4 pages. My professor liked it, said my thesis statement hit the bull’s eye, & made suggestions to guide my work. . I had read Junot Diaz’s This is How You Lose Her several years ago, and I fell in love with his writing and with the main character, Yunior. Diaz originally published each of the short stories in this book separately before combining them together to read like a novel. Well, during my 1st semester, my adoration for the short story grew. As a result, I informed my 2nd semester professor I had a deep interest in “linked short story collections” that read like novels, like Diaz’s book. So my professor & I built my reading list around this fascination. I included Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried, & he suggested I read Elizabeth Strout’s Olive Kitteridge. After reading them, I knew I wanted to focus my essay on these 3 books, figuring out the glue that binds these linked short story collections together, enabling them to flow like novels even though they consist of independent parts. Not all linked short story collections succeed in this. In fact, Jennifer Egan’s A Visit From the Goon Squad is an example I use to show how a linked short story collection can fall apart. . I submitted my complete draft of 15 pages (over 4,500 words), proving my theory on this topic. Prior to receiving this draft, my professor told me she wasn’t convinced Diaz, O’Brien, & Strout had written true novels. After she read my complete draft, she told me I had changed her mind. . I still have some editing to do before submitting the final, polished draft in 2 weeks. I'll also return to my fiction writing & read 4 more books, submitting a one-page synopsis on each. . I have been bouncing around ideas of what I want to do once I finish my Masters degree in January. I have one particular, long-term writing project that I really want to delve into and accomplish, but I am not willing to share that with too many people just yet. Outside of the creative writing front, a huge part of me misses teaching literature and writing, and I have thought often about teaching at the community college level or applying for adjunct professor positions. Of course, I'm qualified for editing and writing positions--including curriculum writing--and for workplace training and project management positions. But throughout the past couple months, I have also begun wondering about becoming a part of prison reform programs and the movement to bring quality education into the prison system. I feel education is the foundational key to success in every other area of life. . Now, what does this have to do with a selfie on an abnormally dismal, chilly May day in Texas? Well, I learned yesterday while I was getting my hair done (see how nice my hair looks even after sleeping on it and doing cardio?) that my hairdresser has a family member who teaches in the prisons. It was the first time I had spoken to anyone about this growing interest of mine, and it was refreshing to learn that I am not the only one interested in this career path. I don't know for certain that I will go down this road, but I am going to do my research, put some feelers out, and think concretely about what impact I wish to make once I am done earning my MFA in Writing. . . . Why I shouldn’t be your abspiration - I’m currently working on building mass and up 10lbs from this time last year. Yet I still have a six pack? This is because I generally carry less weight around my midsection. It’s genetics. It could be easy to sell a program saying get abs like me! But that would be misleading. I train heavy which has built a strong core and I don’t carry fat around the midsection which shows it off. Training someone exactly like me likely wouldn’t give the same results. However I am a physical therapist and strength coach who has never experienced back pain while training. For those reasons you should listen to my core advice! #brainsandbrawn

Most of us struggle with something. For some it may be losing weight. Maybe it’s finding the balance between work, training and other hobbies. Or maybe it’s something completely different. For me, it’s putting on muscle. I am naturally a fairly lean person with visible abs 90% of the time. However over the last 3 or so years, it’s taken me a lot of effort to build muscle. Now you may say why don’t you just eat more? I eat at or above most females I know. I also just added 200 calories to my diet. And lost 2#. Now I could also gorge myself on everything. However the goal is to add muscle, not fat. Fat doesn’t lift more weight. So now the plan is to keep steadily increasing calories until I get movement in the right direction. #brainsandbrawn
