On December 11th, 1969, Korean Air YS-11 was hijacked just 10 minutes after its take-off at 12:25 pm by a North Korean sleeper-agent. Due to pressure from the international community, the North Korean regime promised that it would repatriate all 50 people from the plane. That was February 4th, 1970. But then, on the 14th, the North broke its own promise, returning only 39 passengers.
Testimonies of the 39 people who returned revealed that 4 crew members and 7 other passengers including my father were being detained against their will by the regime. Those 11 people have not been allowed to come home or to even contact family members.
On February 6th, 1970, my father strongly argued that he should be sent back home. He sang a song titled “I want to go back” in Korean. He kept singing that song as the soldiers dragged him out. Other abductees have not seen nor heard from him since.
Based on the detailed testimonies of 39 abductees who returned to South Korea, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) demanded that North Korea repatriate the rest of the hijack victims. But North Korea claimed that those 11 people were staying “of their own free will.” Against this preposterous claim, the ICRC proposed that they verify through a 3rd country and a 3rd party whether those 11 people were truly staying “of their own free will.” But North Korea rejected ICRC’s proposal outright.
Ladies and gentlemen, that was 50 years ago.

Hwang Won, a former TV producer from South Korea, was not allowed to return to his home country after arriving involuntarily to North Korea on a hijacked plane on 11 December 1969. Despite repeated requests from his family, the North Korean authorities have refused to disclose information regarding Hwang Won’s vital status or whereabouts for the last 50 years. South Korean authorities must call on the North Korean authorities to provide accurate information on Hwang Won, who will turn 82 this year.
