For @bugsnink So my snail housing and rearing tubs are fairly basic to aid in general maintenance. I’m currently using substrate with them however you are able to run them bare-bottom with a bin full of substrate for egg laying. I haven’t decided what I like better yet so I’m trying them both long term and will swap all breeders over at some point. You do want a moist substrate regardless of housing methods, not water logged or anything but some moisture to it. Thin sheets of wood from logs or tree bark is more for me to feel better than for them. I mist four times a week, not much though. Again you don’t want a sopping wet mess for you or the snails. They don’t need heat or anything, I’ve found that anything higher than 75f/24c they will not do very well and slowly pass away. Feeding wise I use large deli cups sunk down into the substrate and feed off predominantly leafy greens and grated root veggies. I do provide calcium and mineral supplements dusted into the salads every two weeks. This is not only for them to properly develop their shells and to also turn them into an excellent prey item for many species out there! Even some birds like a snail snack! I’m proud to announce two big news today: First, some of my snails moved into a new “terrarium”! Why did I put it in quotation marks? - It’s not a real terrarium, but originally it’s just a small green house from i*ea, which is called “Socker”. On Tuesday I put the soil, a few plants and seeds in it. And today I added sticks, leaves, other things like eggshells and of course the snails. Okay, I left one snail in the old tank, because.. Second, this snail is actually laying eggs! I think I have to kill those little creatures... The babies hatched! Thank you @kittylapin! She inspired me, so I didn’t kill the babies, but I’ll set them free. Maybe I’ll do it in May or April, we’ll see. When they come out of their ‘hole’ I will try to count them, this could be difficult But as soon as I know how many snails hatched, I will notify you. And if you wondered why there are loom bands at the box: For more fresh air I wanted to make a fly screen lid, but this kind of box is not the best one for this so I had to find a solution. Therefore the screen will stay I made a very strange construction. So there’s not a whole lot going on around here currently, we have animals breeding and laying also some eggs incubating. But it’s business as usual cleaning and feeding the hoard as we await some hatchlings. I’ve taken this time to double down on the feeder insects I raise, it’s easy to see what are the favorite keepers though. This is another round of F1 brown-lipped snails coming out of the incubator, some will be used as feeders and others will be kept and raised till sexual maturity. There has been such an influx of people wanting CBB snails that it would be silly not to add a few more totes to the rack-o-bugs. They’re growing as fast as they can I assure everyone though, healthy and parasite free snails coming soon!!
