Since having the neck brace on, we get less stares of the “but why” nature since my illness is much more visible. That being said there is more staring in general but I get it, I would stare if I saw something out of the usual too. Today’s awkward moment was when we were checking out the lady in front of us was staring and then said “ohh, that doesn’t look very comfortable” Then the cashier was casually like “ohh what happened?” To which my mom said “she has a disease which makes everything loose and so her neck is loose too” The lady’s face was like And the people behind bus were like After about a 30 second pause of no one saying anything she didn’t stop there and said “we go back to see her surgeon next month and a fusion is likely in her future” More looks During this time I was just majorly avoiding all eye contact and pretending I couldn’t hear anyone. Really I just felt super awkward in the situation (mostly because of how the conversation started and everyone’s reaction). Admittedly I could be better in social situations, especially when reacting/responding to people but it is what it is and I wanted to share this to make “awkward” situations less awkward (maybe).
