The power and value of our identity is so subtle and understated that it’s something easy to overlook, take for granted even. The notion of identity, especially these last couple of years, has become politically weaponized and synonymous with a particular type of narrative when actuality the subject itself is much more nuanced, complex and highly relevant to every individual on this planet. Throughout the series, Buffy has wrestled with the idea of being the Slayer and that struggle is a doorway that allows that notion to be explored in a variety of ways. For instance, take Buffy’s big speech to her mother about who she is at the end of season 2. It echoes the experience of someone coming out. In season 3’s episode, Helpless, Buffy gets a taste of something she’s silently longed for: normalcy. It doesn’t go well. She quickly realizes that her abilities, despite whatever baggage they add to her life, are very much part of who she is and integral to how she functions in the world. There are a lot of layers to this episode but it mostly speaks to the experience of someone wishing they weren’t who they are and realizing, after trials and tribulations, that the very thing they dislike about themselves is very much a component of who they are.
