A competitor in the Bushkashi - another part of the Altai Eagle Festival. Two riders on horseback tussle over a goats carcass. It begins in a very sporting fashion where one man (yes, it is always a man) picks up the 80kg headless goat and hoists it onto his saddle. He grabs two of the legs and then the other rider reaches for the other two. Not as easy as it seems. The horses, no doubt sensing the bedlam to follow, need some convincing to get close enough to each other. There is some coercion, but not overly violent. Still, in this land, an animal is an animal. Then it is matter of who hangs on the longest. There are a series of knockout heats held over two days. I witnessed the eventual winner take three restarts before eventually wearing down his opponent. I stayed in the loser of this heat’s ger on the Saturday night and saw how important this competition was to him. As I showed him and his children the pics on the back of the camera I could see him study the techniques of both men. His eyes flared with a wry Mongolian smile “Next year!” So, the next day the champion finally wore down his last opponent and, as tradition demands, he raced to the ger of his family and hurled the carcass onto the roof. His reward? Handfuls of sweets thrown to him and his now many supporters. Awesome!
