A twiner or scrambler with green, wiry branchlets and leaves that have numerous longitudinal viens. The leaves can be variable in shape, usually elliptic or lanceolate. The flowers are small, white-purple in colour, with fringed petals. They occur in the upper leaf axils during spring.
The berries are orange with black seeds and white arils. They are edible but a bit bland. The root tubers can also be eaten, raw or baked. Wombats like the tubers too (hence the common name), as do bandicoots. It's a great habitat plant cause birds eat the fruits and wallabies & kangaroos eat the shoots.
It occurs all along the east coast of mainland Aus, common in moist, sheltered forest, in gullies and along rainforest margins.

Tasmanian native pepper berries. I've never seen them in the raw and can’t believe how utterly beautiful they are. It felt a shame if I didn't share a picture of this bush food before I pick, dry and pop them in the grinder. .

Last week, while rummaging through Vinnies, I found a DVD series called Bush Tucker Man. Being the Canadian that I am, I'd never heard of the chap, but it sounded really interesting so I brought it home. Bear and I have been glued to the episodes all week, learning so many amazing things about Australia's history, bush tucker (food) and bush medicine, and some ingenious survival skills. I'm looking at the bush with totally new eyes now, wanting to know what everything is and whether I should bring it home for dinner, use it to deliver me of mine enemies (kidding!!), or use it for something clever like glue, a canoe, or clothespins. :-) @bushtuckerman_leshiddins

In 2007 I returned home to Australia, after many years as an apprentice natural dyer working with only tropical plants of Southeast Asia. The first dye I ever made in Australia was with these Lilly pilly, a native Australian edible fruit. This variety is Syzgium smithii, rich dark colour. They were growing everywhere in our neighbourhood.
I dyed a small collection of scarves in Eri/ peace silk.
Its been a while but I collected these berries from the south coast.
This will not have the same effect on cotton of course which is why selection of colour and fabric is important. Silk 'naturally' takes dye better than any other fibre. #nofilter
