A spirit photo produced by and featuring Georgiana Houghton, from her 1882 book, Chronicles of the Photographs of Spiritual Beings (which I learned about thanks to @weirdhistorian , I’ll share his post about her book in my story!) Ironically I just did a research project that included some of Houghton’s paintings, but I did not know she dabbled in photography as well! Georgiana Houghton was a 19th century artist and medium, who used art as an extension of her Spiritualist practices. She had a solo exhibition in London a few years ago, which featured her abstract watercolor spirit drawings from the 1860s-70s (I will also share some of her artworks in my story). Here is a postmortem cabinet card of Myrtie Nash, whose body is resting on a carved Eastlake-style armchair. I love how Myrtie’s face is serene and smooth, and she truly seems to be at peace. Her hands are posed in a casual manner, one at her belly, the other at her thigh. At first glance, this Victorian girl seems to be merely sleeping. However, looking closer, her fingers are rigid and stiffened with death. While her dress fits with the fashion of the era, her straight and uneven hair is unusual. I wonder if it was recently shorn due to illness. ✂️ I found records of a Myrtie L. Nash who died on March 14, 1887 at 15 years, 2 months, and nine days old. She has an obelisk-style gravestone and is buried at Hopkinton Cemetery in Delaware County, Iowa. We will never know, but I’d like to think that this is her resting place.

All the Many Faces We Have Borne, and Dead Are We _ An old friend, Renée - I’m not sure where she is these days. I used to make art with photos of friends, but I don’t do that anymore because when they leave, they usually want to take their likenesses with them. So, unless it’s a gift that only that specific person sees, I don’t do it anymore. That way I don’t have to remove art when they inevitably have enough of me. Understandable, really.
