Calico ghost town, known for dozens of silver-barite mines, was a fun visit. I was totally surprised by the great geology and they serve up a great breakfast in the old saloon! Calico is NE of Barstow and near Rainbow Basin (famous for Barstovian land mammal fossils) and the Calico Early Man site. Pickhandle volcanic rocks hosted the numerous NW trending silver-barite veins emplaced along steeply dipping faults. The highest ore grades were found in the oxidized apex of the veins where silver chlorides and native silver were the chief ore minerals. The main pulse of mineralization occurred ~17 mya. Tons of low-grade silver ore is still in the ground too! The Calico Mountains are part of a complexly deformed region of California's central Mojave Desert called the ECSZ Eastern Cali Shear Zone. ..and the ECSZ transitions northward into a longer structure called the Walker Lane Belt/Trough ..more info in my next post Volcaniclastic sediments and dacitic rocks of the ore-bearing Pickhandle Formation accumulated rapidly ~19mya. The deformed rocks in my pics are overlying fine-grained lacustrine sediments (Calico Member of the Barstow Formation) that were deposited ~19-17mya in the basin created atop a sunken hanging wall of an extensional horst/graben structure. Several ~17mya dacite domes intrude the Calico Member. And deposition of the Pickhandle Formation and Calico Member was coeval with rapid unroofing of the CMMCC Central Mojave Metamorphic Core Complex. ...on my bucket list for my next visit to SoCal ... The Calicos experienced Miocene extension and Neogene transpression/deformation and the Calico fault (part of the ECSZ) now forms part of a WNW striking transpressional restraining bend (Transverse Ranges) along the Pacific/North America tectonic plate boundary. This major plate boundary is now recognized to be “splintered” northward into two pieces.. not as simple as the trace of the San Andreas Fault System!! ..see my next post.
