Although Morrissey’s politics and antics have come to define him more than his music, his iconic voice sounds as good as it ever has. I feel like I should say that posting this is not in any way an endorsement of whatever his politics of the week are. It’s grown increasingly difficult to seriously listen to him over the years, but I don’t think anyone should necessarily be surprised by his behavior when he’s always been this way. Anyway, California Son is his first covers album and comes less than two years after his last solo venture, Low In High School. I think covers albums have a certain amount of self-indulgence behind them, which Morrissey is in no short supply of. The album cover is a clue that it shouldn’t be taken too seriously either. With all that in mind, California Son becomes easier to take in. It’s the rare sound of Morrissey enjoying himself. He gathered quite the list of guests for this record too, with the most notable being Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day and Ed Droste of Grizzly Bear. Some covers are more memorable than others but I think this is the only type of album he could release right now. No one would take his normal political dirges seriously and with a Broadway residency behind him, he seems to be taking to this crooner role nicely. Interestingly enough, some of the choices fiercely contradict the views he’s taken of late, particularly Bob Dylan’s “Only A Pawn In Their Game” and Joni Mitchell’s “Don’t Interrupt The Sorrow”. The album will be officially available tomorrow! There’s also an indie exclusive variant on blue vinyl in addition to standard black.
