WHICH COUNTRY SURPRISED YOU THE MOST?
____________________________________
Ghana exceeded all my expectations:
1. One of the friendliest people I’ve met.
2. Safe as any country can be.
3. Photogenic!
4. No tourists.
5. Orderly, not as chaotic as it’s neighbors!

Put it on your list if you want to have a first experience in West Africa! When you do, be sure to visit the lively Cape Coast, pictured above. Do you prefer shot 1, 2 or 3?

Sierra Leone: Turning Boys Into Men
-
@joshuamtopham called me Friday afternoon out of the blue. We’d never met, never talked, and had no prior connection.
-
“Ustem wi de si” I asked him 30 seconds into his Krio cold call.
-
“I lef to yu bra” he calmly replied.
-
15 minutes later he was at my office and we talked for well over an hour, and could have talked for 8 if I hadn’t been in the middle of a project. -
It happens so often that It’s become normal to me, but it’s strange really. How can 2 strangers they have never crossed paths, become instant friends and feel like they’ve known each other their whole lives? No awkwardness, no “one up’ing”, no bluffing, just real conversation about experiences, people, and of course plasas?
-
I’ve pondered this time and time again as it continues to happen to me over and over when I meet someone that shares a similar love for the country I call my home
-
When I meet someone that has lived in Sierra Leone for an extended period of time, consciously or subconsciously I have instant respect for that person. I know what they’ve been through, at least in part. I know that they’ve been burned by the sun, that they’ve been bitten by the mosquitos, that they’ve walked the Dwarzak hills and ridden Okada’s through the flat dusty roads in Bo and Kenema. I know that they probably struggled at first, that after the “newness” or being in West Africa wore off, there was the defining moment when they had to make the decision. The decision to go all in, love the food, speak the language, brook their clothes, and barter at the local market.
-
I was there. I went through all of those things, I struggled and went through just a little bit of what it’s like to live ones whole life in Sierra Leone.
-
When you know someone has walked where you have walked and has come to the same realization as you that Sierra Leone is one of the greatest countries in the world with the most accepting and love people on the planet, you form an instant and lifelong friendship.
-
Yesterday I sat at church and listened to Josh report to over 200 people. I heard sniffles, I saw tears wiped, and I saw random individuals hug him and thank (rest in comments)

"The Canopy Walk, is located just outside Cape Coast, in the thick tropical jungle of Kakum National Park in Ghana.
Designed by two Canadians, the canopy walkway was opened on Earth Day in 1995. The bridge hang from the trees over 130 feet above the ground.
They created the walkway with the idea to increase ecotourism in the area.
Across over 1,000 feet of walkway, is one of only 3 locations in Africa with a canopy walkway".

"Please! Please! Miss!! Take a picture of us?!! Remember us ok!!" At first I wasn't sure but they insisted. So I took these shots to keep them smiling. My heart was instantly warmed. 3 Ghanaian sisters. I instantly saw myself and my own sisters. 2 close in age and 1 baby. That's literally my family set up. This lil one with the water was too feisty lol. She's not the oldest but definitely the Boss. A mom with a new born baby tethered to her back, while she continues to work by the shore with the help of her older son. A woman and a young man tallying up the day's earnings thus far... Spending time and talking with the Fisher folk and people of Cape Coast and learning of our History is priceless. So many emotions. So much enlightenment. I am grateful beyond measure. Swipe to live these moments through me and see the world with my eyes for a second... #Ghana #CapeCoast #YearOfReturn #YearOfReturn2019
