This is a picture of me with my eldest son, Raif ❤️⁣ ⁣⁣ I had him in between my Chief Resident year at UCSF and before Cardiology fellowship at BWH.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Looking back on our journey so far as Mom and Son, I’ve made mistakes and I have regrets. ⁣ ⁣ I was not very mindful and I wish I had read this book back in those days ⁣ ⁣⁣ What have I learned (the hard way ):⁣ ⁣⁣ Type A over achieving doctors Moms don’t always have sons with the same personality and this is a good thing ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ trying to remake your son in your image does him a disservice. The problem was me and not my son.⁣ ⁣⁣ don’t push him with flash cards,Kumon, Huntington learning, Kaplan , private tutors...let him learn on his own pace ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ since when did the world fall apart with a B or C in school ? Being a perfectionist Mom is a character flaw not an asset ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ as the book says - your son is not lazy because he learns and lives at his own pace.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ success in school is imparting a love of lifelong learning and curiosity and cannot be measured by SAT scores ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ When my son was 15 he said something that broke my heart - ⁣⁣ “Mom, I am not as smart as you. I am doing the best that I can.” . ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ That’s what it took for me to realize that I had shattered his self confidence by my toxic Tiger Mom behavior. ⁣ ⁣⁣ Teenage boys don’t always like to have long chats with their Mom, so ⁣⁣ after much soul searching and tears, I decided to write him a letter to apologize and let him know how proud I was of him .⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Yesterday I watched him walk across the stage to receive his Bachelors degree in Biochemistry from Oberlin College. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He received a cash award from the Ohio chapter of the American Chemical Society for his research on use of melanin as an indicator for clean drinking water. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He was inducted into Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He plans to get his pHD in Biochemistry.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He is vegan, he marches for animal rights, uses no plastic or leather and is the kindest person and most non materialistic person I know. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ In short he is the opposite of me and I am so proud of the man he has become ❤️ #boymom #tigermom #drmom #planomom #mompride

Well done Dr Mohammad Aasim - A young Pakistani cardiac surgeon, Dr Mohammad Aasim has become the only surgeon who alone has undertaken 507 cardiac surgeries in comparatively short period in the Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar. Dr Aasim single handedly started cardiac procedures on December 1st, 2017 (12Rabiulawwal) with a small team and operated the first open heart surgery (coronary artery bypass grafting) on December 6, 2017. It was the first ever surgery in the history of HMC. By May 20, 2019, Dr Aasim has done 507 cardiac surgeries, which is stated to be a record for a single cardiac surgeon anywhere in the world. He belongs to Dir district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He had reportedly declined to accept a number of good offers from overseas and preferred to serve his people in Pakistan. Mostly poor patients are operated in the cardiac surgery department of HMC, for totally free or almost free of cost. Those close to him are saying that despite limited resources in hand, Dr Aasim has strictly been following the Western standards, like minimally invasive AVR surgery and VSR+CABG surgery, and his work was widely appreciated in recent international conference. He was the delegate invited from Pakistan to the conference held in Netherlands . The organisers let him present in the best presentations session and these two posters of Dr Aasim were displayed on the digital screen throughout the conference till Saturday, along with the other high standard international presentations. According to officials in HMC, a fully paid open heart is done in less than USD3000 in HMC, including all the services fee disposables and hospital expenses. In Europe and elsewhere, even in China, minimum cost of the same procedure is USD15000. No doubt, he was fully supported by three people in this noble cause.
