"WWP spouse retreats really help my wife. They provide a shoulder to lean on, allowing caregivers to share bonds and common experiences. They know what you and your family are going through, and they want you to know they care. That helps out a lot, because a lot of people don’t recognize the spouse and that they are going through a traumatic event too. Families can bond with each other and express what’s going on in their lives. You don’t have to be distant with each other." -- Wounded warrior, Anthony Villarreal.

A #wheelchairlife mostly means a life punctuated by TRANSFERS!!
-
Some are easy, some are more challenging! Some take place in obvious moments, some not so much. Some look “OK”, some may seem awkward . Some are predictable, some not at all!
-
The “problem” is:
-
No HELP = No TRANSFERS.
-
So help: Yes!… but not any random kind of help! The kind that will allow the upper equation to become:
-
KNOW Help = KNOW Transfers
-
Transfers have to be done by people who have experience and more importantly people who genuinely care about you and obviously know exactly what they’re doing (with you)!
… People in good physical condition, able to find the right balance between strength, patience and gentleness. People who are NOT going to let go of you in the process of “moving” you !…
-
I’m sure bells are already ringing and some of you (unfortunately) know precisely what I’m talking about!
-
So… to those of you always willing to give a hand… use both ! No matter how easy you think transferring another person is or looks like, please hear me out: it takes some serious skills to do it properly… There is definitely NO “one-size-fits-all” transfer technique!
-
For example, some people have enough strength in their upper body to bare and manage being held or pulled by their arms. Try this with me and you’ll simply have to pick me up from the ground in no time… that is after witnessing a spectacular drop-down in strange contortions you would never have expected possible!
-
There would be so much more to say about these so precious transfers… I’ll let you guys to it ✍⬇️
Can’t wait to read your epic stories on the matter
-
My point here is that transfers in the world of disability should be taken as seriously as in the world of sports ⚽️
-
I have to confess that the ONLY person I trust with my eyes closed in ALL situations (even in the most improvised during our travels and adventures) is my sweet husband (photo)!
