Troops of the US 5th Engineers wade through the water at Fox Green Sector, Omaha Beach, 8th of June 1944. One of these engineers to land was Lieutenant Horace Henderson. As he came ashore he recalled seeing the beach covered with debris, sunken and wrecked vehicles, he also said he saw many bodies in the water. Although the fighting moved inland the beach was still under German artillery fire and German sniper fire. Hendersons job was to hand out maps to the soldiers but because the frontline was just over the bluff there was no need. So he assisted with bringing materials ashore. He recalls digging in on the beach just at dusk and recalls hearing a loud noise and looked and saw allied ships lighting up the sky with flak as German bombers made a futile attempt to halt supplies making it to shore. As the soldiers moved inland they met a whole new kind of terrain. Hedgerows everywhere giving the Germans a perfect defending position and excellent cover. They hedgerows were thick and impassable. Since the US Army had no training to deal with them accept to attack head on many causalities were taken. The situation was growing increasingly tough. There was a stalemate in Normandy with no apparent gains for either side. The allies deployed a special bomber the Germans nicknamed "Jabos" One German artillery observer remembers, after our battery fired a round we all had to run and hide. If you couldn't find a spot that's it your dead. This bomber was destroying the Germans but the Germans Fallschrimjäger who outgunned the infantry on Normandy were also wreaking havoc on the US forces. German mortars were responsible for 75 percent of the US causalities at Normandy especially the Fallschirmjägers heavy mortars. The allies tanks were also being affected by the hedgerows for even they could not make it through forcing them to cut through open fields causing mass casualties because the tanks could barley traverse their turrets and they were exposed within German artillery and Panzerfausts range. ♤Continued down below in the comments♤ #ww2 #wwii #carentan #Normandy #omaha #dday #operationoverlord #worldwar2 #history #retro #vintage

The video above is from Band of Brothers Episode 3, showing the carnage and intense urban fighting that occurred in Carentan from June the 10th-14h,1944. The first few seconds are one of my favorite snippets of the whole scene showing a Catholic priest from the 506th PIR administering final rites to the dying while under heavy fire on a street in Carentan. Then Hoobler points out the craziness of that to Malarkey who says "Crazy fools the Irish!", which I always life at being an Irish decedent and Catholic myself. The Priest was later awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his incredibly brave and inspiring actions. I also thought that first clip was appropriate since its March, the month of St. Patrick. The following scene shows Easy Company's MG squad gunning down the German Fallschirmjäger pulling out from the battered city. Carentan was a vital city in the success of Operation Overlord as its high ground was a great vantage point and it would allow American forces from both beaches to link up and fight on. American airborne forces from the 101st Airborne Division were tasked with taking this city. After multiple days of intense urban combat, high casualties, and strafing from Luftwaffe Ju-87 Stukas, the city was taken. Shortly after its capture there was a ferocious German counter attack in the outskirts of the battered city called "The Battle of the Bloody Gulch." American forces almost folded and lost their grip on Carentan but a few units, like Easy, held the line against overwhelming odds and allowed the Allies to fight on. A very interesting and important battle indeed. [I DO NOT OWN THIS VIDEO IT IS FROM HBO.] Hope you enjoyed! #carentan #ww2 #hbo #easycompany #bandofbrothers #stpatricksday #ireland #crazy #irish #catholic #101stairborne #screamingeagle #worldwar2 #wwii #easy
