Good morning! . So you guys know me through running but I’m not posting about running this morning, instead I’m introducing you to Laura...the healthcare assistant. . I’ve been a community carer since I was 16 and it was an amazing 10 years and I learned a lot, cried a lot, smiled a lot and probably lost the plot a lot too! . But I’ve always wanted to work within a more clinical setting. I’ve always watched hospital programmes and wanted to be part of that world. And today I have my first shift as a HCA in a hospital! . I’m fortunate to be given this chance, and just through training I’ve learned so much already and although I’m anxious, I’m so excited to have a fresh start today and continue learning and progressing. . The job I never wanted to apply for. Yet it was thrust upon me. The job that required no job interview. No checks to see if you were qualified. My CV unable to provide the qualifications and expertise for the job role. Yet here I am. My old job a distant memory to the life I had back then. The person I use to be. As with everything I've had to adapt. Had to accept. Had to thrive. Thrive I have. You see this job comes without holiday leave. I cannot ring in sick. Breaks are extinct in this line of work. This job has had no health and safety tested. Manual handling is required to inevitably break your back. Lunch is a microwave meal at the end of the day. Alone at night. The minimum wage in the UK is £8.21 an hour. For a typical 9-5 job that's £65 a day. My wage I hear you ask? £66.15 a WEEK. For 24/7 care. 7 days a week. Thankfully money isn't my reward. You Littlefoot are. The suffocating loneliness consumes me. On the bad days I wish I could pick up my coat and clock off my shift. Walk away to spend an evening in another life. Yet even with the bad days. My health deteriorating. The guilt that clutches at my heart. The grief that engulfs me. The exhaustion.... I get up everyday to do a job I never wanted yet now its here I couldn't imagine my life without it. Without you. I dress you. I change your nappies. I bathe and do your cares. I lift you out of bed. I am a nurse. A therapist in specialist areas. A receptionist. The advocate.... A mum. It's the worse job in the world. Yet its the best. When people ask what I do for a living. I no longer squirm at the question. I Proudly boast I look after my severely disabled daughter. I help her live. I help her grow. Happy Carers week to every single parent in my line of 'work'. This week isn't about our children. It's about us. The unsung heroes. I see you. Happy 62nd birthday to my mum. You made it! Five years ago my mother acquired meningitis and was in a coma for eight months. When she awoke she couldn't walk, talk or remember anything. It's a slow road towards functioning, but today she can walk and talk. Her memories are vanished and she needs 24hr care. It's a challenge to keep up the grace as a carer, hats off to all carers! This photo was just after she had wandered off from my house and was brought back in a police car, she was quite traumatised. Found her a relaxing job and put on music.. Always looking for ways to alleviate her anxiety.
