In October of 1910, the British freighter Umona was completed. She weighed in at 3,750 tons, had a length of 360 ft and could make 13 knots. Umona was a mix of a cargo ship and passenger ship, a hybrid that was dubbed a cargo liner. Her career from her start was with Bullard, King & Company Ltd., during WWI and the more calm interwar years. When WWII eventually came along her passenger service was less useful but cargo holds in full use. Some AA mounts were put onboard, just a handful of machine guns, for some defense. After the first two years of war, U-boats moved a bit further south and concentrated on shipping off western Africa. This was not very well appreciated by Britain at this time as Umona left Walvis Bay on March 20th of 1941, unescorted, headed to Freetown a load of maize. On March 30th, just 90 miles out from Freetown, she was intercepted by Whilhelm Schulz’s U-124. Just after 11:00 PM a torpedo slammed into Umona’s port side between holds 3 and 4. The old girl came to a halt and this allowed a following torpedo hit near the engine room to send the cargo liner to the bottom stern first after settling low to the waterline. Only a few life rafts made it off in time, but it was just enough as, after 8 days, three crewmen were picked up by HMS Foxhound. The second group of two were picked up after 14 days at sea by the freighter Lorca.
