To further celebrate the future work with the historical archives of @hamburgsud_group we announced last week, we share today another of our exhibits related to the company: the yard model of the general cargo ship Santa Teresa. The six freighters of the Santa-class had an historical relevance for the Federal Republic of Germany. In late 1949, the Allies and the Federal Republic of Germany signed the Petersberg Agreement, a modification of the Occupation Statute of Germany after World War II. This allowed, among other things, for Germans to build ships again. The Santa-class were the first ships that Hamburg Süd had built. They were all made in the early 1950s at the Howaldtswerke shipyard in Hamburg. The first four ships were virtually a continuation of the Belgrano-class that Hamburg Süd owned before the war. After realising that this four ships were good built and making profit, the company ordered two more to the same yard. This were larger and faster than their younger sisters. The Santa Teresa was the first of the second generation, and started her duty in jannuary 1953. Her route was Hamburg, Bremen, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Recife, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Montevideo, Buenos Áires and back. The ship did a round-trip in approximately 100 days. By 1961 much had change in Germany and for the Hamburg Süd. The company sold then the Santa Teresa to owners from Bangladesh. She was renamed Rustom and kept serving until 1980, when she was scrapped at Gadani Beach.
Her yard model is on display in our exhibition about the history of modern maritime logistics, on deck 6 of the museum.
