I want to keep you up to date about one special part of my current project: Spirulina microalgae cultivation! (posting from 11th of july) ✅❇️✳️♻️
What you can see on the first pic is a selfmade lab-scale PHOTOBIOREACTOR❗️ It s a glass cylinder containing 4 L of media (colorless) + algae (dark green). By pumping in air (green tubes) spirulina gets the optimal turbulence for growing. A piece of aluminium foil around is for keeping up the temperature of about 25-30 degrees celsius and preventing the algae from getting a „sunburn“ ☀️. pH (around 11) and temperature has to be checked everyday . What‘s crazy about: when my professor first told me to keep an eye on the algae everyday I thought „it s only algae..what should happen“.. and suddenly in week 3 of cultivation one liter of spirulina simply died!!⚰️⚱️R.I.P. ❌ They are much more sensitive to UV light, pH and temperature than I’ve ever thought and normal green algae are! Hopefully next week I can harvest about 5 L to analyze it by HPLC (beta-carotene). Yesterday I harvested 7 mg dry biomass (150 mL). Wish you all a nice weekend, enjoy it

Cumin-roasted carrot hummus with flaxseed crackers.
Do you make your own hummus? I think it’s one of those things that can seem more time consuming to make than it is. In fact it’s dead easy and if you do choose homemade you will avoid the use of hormone disrupting and environment damaging single-use plastic and that can only be a good thing.

Here’s my recipe:
4 medium carrots, roughly chopped
Drizzle olive oil
1/2 tsp ground cumin
Pinch sea salt
1 can organic chickpeas, rinsed and drained
Juice 1 lemon
60ml tahini, well stirred
1 garlic clove, crushed
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp fine sea salt
2-3 tbsp filtered water

Preheat the oven to 180C. Place carrots on baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with the cumin & salt and toss well.
Spread out on a baking tray and roast until tender, about 40 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through.
Place the roasted carrots into a food processor along with the remaining ingredients except the water. Blend until smooth. Gradually add the water 1 tbsp at a time until completely smooth.

Fresh is best when it comes to veggies, but if that’s not an option, the next best thing is to serve vegetables steamed.

Cooking veggies destroys some of the nutrients- especially Vitamin C. The best way to retain the vitamins in vegetables is to steam them. .

People ask if frozen vegetables are rich in vitamins and the answer is yes, if the vegetables have been frozen soon after picking.

To put it in perspective, vegetables that have been frozen soon after picking may have higher levels of some vitamins than limp veggies that have been sitting around for weeks. .
These carrots and peas have been steamed for a few minutes, just to soften.
If you don’t have a steamer, use a colander over a pan of boiling water with a lid on top. * More on this in stories*
