“And that’s what America is all about...to own a car with no money in the bank.” -Cliff Huxtable
➖
See, the cost of a thing is never really the cost of a thing. What you “pay” for your car the day you drive it off the lot, is not what you pay in total.
➖
Owning a car is expensive as HECK. No matter if you paid for outright or not.
➖
That is why one of the worst things you can do is go into debt for a car. And to top it off, have jacked up credit while doing so.
➖
Remember, as long as you own a car, it’s going to cost you.
➖
I’ve never had a car note, but I’ve always had car expenses. So, I had to make sure I could afford the car!
➖
Affording the car is considering what you’ll pay in gas, insurance, maintenance, tires, detailing, etc.; it is NEVER only the price you paid. Average annual cost of a car with a payment of $523 (the average car payment) is a little over $8,000/year! Doing that for 5 years.....costs you roughly $35,000. For. A. Car. May be more or less depending on how much you drive.
➖
And that’s America for you. Most of us buy liabilities we think are assets, and so we ensure we will never be able to stop working paying for these costly mistakes in spite of the wealthy telling us to buy assets to pay for these types of things first.

This makes me so happy!!!! We started hard core back in January of this year and at first it was so thrilling because we paid off all our small debts and had so much to celebrate. I know I could take out the savings and pay the car down $10k today but that won’t work for us and that’s ok. For my husband especially it’s a peace of mind know we have the savings. Since we rely on his income in order for me to stay at home he wanted a cushion. I didn’t agree at first and now I am all for it. Just knowing we will have the car paid off in a year is such an accomplishment for us. Our stupid has been having a car payment 15 out of the 17 years of marriage. We allowed others to influence us into thinking we needed that nicer, bigger, “more reliable” car. We stupidly traded in a Toyota Sienna we were paying 0% interest on for a big huge Sequoia with 6.9% interest. How dumb was that?! These charts right here though may not look like much but they keep us accountable. I never want to look at another car payment again. What’s a stupid purchase you have made and are so mad it will never happen again? #debtfreecommunity #debtfree #budgeting #budgetplanning #debt #family #debtfreecharts #color #carpayment #nomore #savingmoney #saving #goals #gmc #nomorecarpayments #stupidtax
On November 1st-54 months ago, 1,673 days ago- we started our journey to become debt free with $107,000 in debt. All of our debts were normal. Student loans. Credit cards. Car payments. .
.
.
On our way home from a vacation to Disney, with our 1 and 2 year old in the back seat of our brand new 2013 car (that we thought we could afford because we were able to make the monthly payments), we decided we needed to become debt free.
.
.
.
We sold our fancy car for a 2005. We stopped going on vacations. We got on a strict budget. We have made a lot of sacrifices a long the way and have also added 3 more littles to our family.
.
.
.
Fast forward to June 2019. This is the month we will pay off our final $2,000ish we have left in our debts and will 100% be debt free!!!!!
.
.
.
We do not currently own a house but have decided to buckle down and start saving for a house since we will be debt free. No more student loans. No more credit card debt. No more car payments.

It’s been a long journey but one that has taught us so so so much! It has all been worth it.
We did it again! We needed a second car in September so we bought this used Nissan Leaf after saving the total in cash. But of course if you want to pay in full without a loan it costs more somehow! ♀️ So instead we put down a huge portion of the cost and set aside the minimum payments for the next five months of our loan. Last week we finalized the last payment and we are so happy to completely own both of our vehicles now! ➕
When we found out we were having twins we got a little worried about how much our monthly expenses would be increasing. It was a comfort remembering we could take off one monthly bill before the kids come!
➕
As we are getting ready to go on an early babymoon, I was thinking about how much fancier our vacation could be if we had postponed our last few car payments and put it towards that instead. But the peace of mind having one less financial worry is rewarding ourselves too! It’s a good reminder to me that meeting your goals in life requires some discipline here and there, but that it’s worth it in the end.

Sorry, but they don't! ♂️ ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
It's safe to say that someone who loves you has your best interest at heart regardless of their opinions or beliefs. So then it's also safe to say that anyone who advises you to buy a car that is about to drop in value 25% once you leave the lot and not mention have your income tied up in debt for the next however many years doesn't have your best interest at heart. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
One could argue that they want you to be in a more reliable car? Okay, I understand that, but you can find reliability in a used car you just have to do your homework. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Another might say new cars come with a warranty. They actually don't come with a warranty. You are paying extra for that either in the sticker price or as an add on. And warranties are for people who don't budget. So because most people don't budget it makes sense why most people purchase the warranty. The dealer knows they are going to make money off this warranty because most vehicles will not have the maintenance expenses equivalent to the warranty cost. #Paychecks2Power #DebtFree #Budgeting #DebtfreeCommunity #Patience
Society has been selling us from the time we were babies to subscribe to a certain way of life: Go to school, get a job, pay taxes, buy a house, have kids and repeat the cycle.⠀
.⠀
We were PROGRAMMED to believe that going into business for ourselves was risky. But what you won’t hear is how risky it is to commit 4 decades to doing work that has a one-time payout and won’t take care of you OR your family beyond your working years…
.⠀
The longer that we subscribe to the way we were sold on in our formative years, the harder it is for us to break free because of all the student loans, house and car payment, costs to raise kids, etc.⠀
.⠀
Look, I’m not saying not to go out and do most, if not all of those things. That’s not my point at all.⠀
.⠀
What I am saying is that some of y’all are burying a dream you had because society sold you on something else and YOU NEED TO SELL YOURSELF ON GETTING AFTER IT if thats what’s inside you.
