Splendid Mariposa Lily (Calochortus splendens). Calochortus is pretty ‘up there’ on my rank of fave genera. Hard to beat the delicacy, beautiful color diversity and strikingness of the genus. Each time I see one it feels like a treat. The name Calochortus can be broken down into Calo-, from the Greek kalos, meaning good or beautiful and -chortus, grass; taken from Chorto, a seaside village in Greece, and by implication pasture or grass. Thus, ‘beautiful grass’. The epithet for this species, splendens, from the Latin splendere, shine, glitter, or splendor, brilliance. Together creating the name Calochortus splendens, or a beautiful, splendid grass, likely a reference to the form of the long, basal leaves and the succeeding showy flower.

This was followed by a Europe-USA teleconference, more internet messages, and an eventual face-to-face meeting in California replete with sightseeing as only locals can do, fascinating conversations during which we solved most of the world’s current problems , and a fantastic sailing trip to Catalina on their beautiful boat during which, we were surrounded by a huge pod of dolphins! A STORY FOR YOU FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA . I met a man here on the island. A native man who left only a few times in his seventy-two years. One of these times occurred when he was in his 20s. He was off in the world, starting a new life, when he received a phone call in the middle of the night. His brother, who was just a few years younger, had committed suicide.
