Paul Morphy

An American chess player considered to have been the greatest chess player of his era and unofficial World Champion (1858-1862).

Morphy was born in New Orleans. He learned to play chess by watching games between his father and uncle. By the age of 9 he became one of the best players in the city. ⠀
He played almost all great players in USA and Europe and had such a great results, so most people agreed he is the world’s best player.

In 1859, at the age 22, he declined he is retiring from chess to begin a law career. He studied law at the University of Louisiana (Tulane University now). But he never became a successful lawyer. He never returned to chess and died in 1884 from a stroke at the age 47. His crypt is in Saint Louis Cemetery N1.
