Time for some more Chinese Export porcelain! These two plates were made in the Qianlong period in the 18th Century. Like the jugs I showed the other week, they are identical but not; they were potted slightly differently, painted by different hands, but the pattern is very similar and probably meant to be the same. Central is a pine tree, with bamboo, rocks, peonies and plum (or prunus) blossom. The pine tree, bamboo and prunus together are called "The Three Friends of Winter"; the pine and bamboo stay green all winter, and the prunus blossoms in the late winter. But one of the plates has a peony instead, which stands for spring and beauty. Rock of course symbolises longevity and steadfastness. The painter exploits to the full the appeal of the various different material qualities, setting the matt, waxy surface of the blossoms against the harsh metallic sheen of the silver objects and the gold bracelet. Spilling out in folds in the near foreground is a broad silk ribbon in antique pink which brings yet another material quality into play.

I am the first generation in my family to be born in the United States. My father immigrated here from Hong Kong when he was 12 and my mother from Honduras as an adult.
I grew up in San Diego, spent most of my summers in Tegucigalpa with my grandparents, and have never been to Asia. English wasn’t my first language, but it is now my dominant one.
I’m generally not Asian *enough,* not quite Latina, and while I’ve lived in several different countries, the U.S. has still always been home, for better or worse. So it seems both ironic and perfect that I now reimagine a classic American dessert for a living. It’s equal parts not traditional enough, (not baked enough, hoho), and not radical enough. But American all the same.
This pie, like my childhood, is filled with mango; fragrant like the fruit I used to pick in the yard. And clothed in a design that is blue and white like the Honduran flag, blue and white like my grandma’s Chinese porcelain with the dragon motif, and blue and white like the California beachscape that is home. “James McNeill Whistler’s Peacock Room has served as a backdrop for displays of Asian #ceramics since the mid- #nineteenthcentury. For a limited time, you can enjoy the room as Whistler saw it—as a work of art in itself.
Whistler painted every surface of the room, from the #decorative #ceiling to the #walls hidden by shelves to the large window shutters, with patterns and colours inspired by #peacocks. With the shelves temporarily empty and walls exposed, you have a rare opportunity to examine the peacock patterns and color harmonies Whistler created. Take advantage of unobstructed views while the room is prepared for a long-term #installation of blue-and-white #Chineseporcelain ceramics, scheduled to open this Spring 2019.
The #history of the #PeacockRoom begins when it was the #diningroom in the #London home of Frederick Leyland, one of Whistler’s patrons. Leyland took part in the “Chinamania” craze that swept #VictorianEngland. His renowned #collection of Kangxi blue-and-white #porcelain filled the dining room shelves. Whistler redecorated the room in 1876 and 1877 as a “harmony in blue and gold” that would complement his #painting Princess from the Land of Porcelain, which hung over the fireplace. Leyland was far from pleased with the transformation—and with the artist’s requested fee—but he kept the room intact. Whistler never saw the Peacock Room again.
Museum founder Charles Lang Freer purchased the Peacock Room in 1904, shipped it from #London, and reassembled it as part of his home in #Detroit, Michigan. There, he filled its shelves with ceramics he collected from Syria, Iran, Japan, China, and Korea. For Freer, the Peacock Room not only reminded him of his friend Whistler, but it also embodied the collector’s personal belief that “all works of art go together, whatever their period.” The room continued to exemplify that philosophy when it was moved in 1920, this time to #Washington, DC, and its permanent home in the Freer Gallery of Art.”

After the inventive, magnificent, and relatively short Xuande period (1426-35) in the history of Chinese porcelain, three ceramically insignificant reigns of the Emperors Zhengtong (1436–49), Jingtai (1450–56), and Tianshun (1457–64) followed. It is not easy to date porcelains fired during this period because they do not bear reign marks. Therefore, it was regarded a ‘blank’ or ‘dark’ period in terms of porcelain production. It was speculated that the imperial factories at Jingdezhen all but closed down between 1436 and 1465, when the colourful Chenghua reign stared. However, recent archaeological discoveries show that the imperial factories have been operative during this time. Large groups of sherds have been found in strata implying a Zhengtong date. Thus, sunshine has graced the ‘dark’ period.

English designer Robert Kime, who has decorated or decorates for everybody, from every day people to the royal family in England, notably Charles, prince of Wales, always surprises and never disappoints.

At the bottom of a set of stairs on a light marble tile floor we see this vignette that Kime put together. He loves to use bright colors and often a wide variety of things from a wide variety of places and centuries. This is a great example, where we see items from England, Ancient Rome, and other parts of Europe. The gilt wood formal mirror hangs above a very plain and primitive 18th or early 19h century work table or small dining table perhaps. There are 19th century prints framed on the wall, and the primitive table holds everything from a pair of 19th century Chinese porcelain vases, one converted into a lamp, to a rather large, round based ancient Roman tinted glass vase. The table also displays a pair of candlesticks, a couple of antique pottery containers, one containing a fresh floral bouquet, and a classical bronze figure, which looks to be 19th century or earlier. .
In front of the table is a very colorful and modern looking bench type seat (possibly a storage chest as well), covered in rather rough modern fabric in blue, red and white. .

On the floor, next to what appears to a deep window seat is an early antique large glazed stoneware jug. On top of the seat on the right where the natural light is coming in, is another larger antique piece of furniture, as well as a small container of flowers. This vignette is a testament to Kime’s great skill in combining mismatched items, using colorful textiles and his experience as an antique dealer to create a room or a small area like this. These items are varied in colors, centuries, country of origin and purpose, but they somehow look like they belong together and they are very skillfully arranged.
