Today the babies are 10 days old and we've officially had them for a week! CK is finally getting used to his noisy roommates! He's also been working hard to learn how to scratch his itchies and to give himself a bath! Many of you find us through @thedodo, but for those of you who joined us later, CK is blind and has neurological deficiencies from a brain injury that happened when he was 4 weeks old. CK feel asleep in his food tray again. It's always so hard to NOT pick him up and snuggle with him (he would not appreciate it). But I laughed when I noticed his lower right ear. You can see it better in the second picture, but it looks like a piece of apple! Today is a beautiful day! My husband, my dad, and my Granddaddy are working on a shed for our backyard. We thought we would let CK explore a bit outdoors for the first time! Before the winter he was a bit too small and we had our hands full with Lois. Raccoons apparent don't like going to the vet any more than any other pet. Who knew? CK has been very itchy lately, so we took him to the vet. Apparently he has fleas. ‍♀️ Treatment started today and he should start feeling better in no time! He was VERY glad when we were in the car heading home. Of course he kept looking so darn cute. CK got an extra big helping of grapes on his tray tonight. Eleven months ago today this sweet boy came into my life. I had no idea how much he would change my life. Since he was about 4 weeks old when I got him, we are calling May 19th his official birthday. So happy 1st birthday, CK! It is true that raccoons like cat food and dog food. But they also love fruits, nuts, veggies, and raw eggs. Cat food is about half, if not less, of CK's diet. Every day he gets an apple, a pear, a small sweet potato, a little cucumber, sometimes carrots and grapes. We substitute sweet peppers for one or two of those, but he always gets grapes and apples - they are his favorites! Most raccoons can pick up food with their paws, as we've all seen in videos, but because of CK's neurological deficits, he isn't able to do that. So when he gets his tray, we have everything already cut up for him in bite size pieces. So I have some good news. And some bad news. And then more good news. The good news might be "reaching" a bit, but I don't want to come with only bad news today. So the first good news: CK is doing great and is still as cute as ever. He has been getting his dinner a little later than usual with all the new babies, but he's ok with it. He loves to sleep on his back in his bed, and the struggle to get turned back right side up is pretty cute from our perspective! Bad news: sweet Lucky, the bunny we got yesterday, didn't make it. I checked on him around 5:30 last night and he seemed to be ok. But when I did my rounds right before bed, sadly be had already passed. My guess is that he had some internal injuries. We are OK. My thoughts have been with sweet Claire today. She was so proud of that little bunny she helped rescue. Houdini immediately performed an escape (twice in fact) which was frustrating, but also a bit of needed comical relief. The last good news: Houdini, and the squirrels (Lucy, Ricky + 2) are all doing great, and eating well! Death is a part of wildlife rehab. It is something you are told to expect from the beginning. It's just nature. We will have losses, and we appreciate the encouragement and understanding we have received through it all.
