Fun Fact: Giuseppe Tornatore's intention was that this movie should serve as an obituary for traditional movie theatres (like the one on the film) and the movie industry in general. After the movie's success, he never mentioned this again. [IMDb]

Fun Fact: After this film was previewed, word got back to Woody Allen that if he just changed his ending, he could have a big hit. Allen declined, saying that the ending is one of the reasons he made the film. [IMDb]

"It was in London that I met Noel Coward, whose plays I had read, and about whom I first heard years before from my Aunt Lelia. She so admired his wit and brilliance, she said, that he was the only man she ever met who terrified her. I could not imagine one so clever as she was holding anyone else in such awe. You can imagine my apprehension when Clifton Webb invited me to dinner, with Noel Coward and Marlene Dietrich (...). I was excited and nervous when Clifton arrived for me at the Dorchester. The glamorous other couple would be waiting for us at the fashionable restaurant. I was introduced to Miss Dietrich, who was nearly fifty then and had never looked more stunning. When I turned to meet the formidable Noel Coward, he caught me off guard with one of the most flattering remarks ever addressed to me. "I want to tell you, Miss Tierney, you gave me one of the most memorable evenings I ever had in the theater in your film Leave Her to Heaven. When I saw the expression on your face in the sequence in which you drowned the boy, I thought, 'That is acting.'" The unexpected compliment stunned and pleased me. I could not help thinking, this, from one of England's great playwrights and actors." (From Self-portrait, 1979).
Another gorgeous photo of Sophia taken by Harry Langdon in 1978.
