To paraphrase a great author: “Everything dies. You, me. Everyone on this planet. Our sun. Our galaxy. And, eventually, the universe itself. This is simply how things are. As the untimely end of everything is what we now face.” And while you’re probably thinking “This is why we don’t invite Newton to parties,” I used this quote because it fairly accurately reflects my common-mode thinking at the beginning of this trip. And then, something happened. In the last seven days alone, we’ve been educated about this beautiful place and the history of its people: their resilience, their struggles, their flaws, their tragedies, their failures, and their successes. We’ve seen aspiring leaders and inspiring newcomers, toured cities that can be used to tell the story of our entire species, and shook the hand of a woman who may have come closer to finding the meaning of life than anyone, while entrenched in the death of millions. So we’ve talked in abstract about our experience, but not so much about what we learned. And if we plan to fix so many of the things that are broken in this world, and all of the things we’ve been wrong about, that’s what we need to focus on. We’ve learned that the difference between living and dying is managing fear, and not being so afraid of losing the things you love that you hold them too tightly. I used to believe in entropy, universal contraction, and the end of all things. Well, I’ve changed my mind. I’m letting go. Because now, I believe in expansion. I BELIEVE we endure. Don’t you see?!! These are three things which are fundamental for our survival. Despite this, it always baffles me that we live in a society where not only are these three resources degraded, but companies actually profit whilst doing so. There is a massive lack of accountability and our governments are failing to safeguard these resources, and all over the world we are seeing the impacts of this. We are exposed to so many pollutants, toxins, chemicals all which contribute to the illness of us and the environment we depend on. These three things are deeply inter-related, and a negative impact on one will have negative impacts on the others. Many of us have forgotten that these resources are the foundation of not only our health but the health of the environment in the state in which we depend on it. Society continues to support a model that degrades and destroys this system without even a second thought. Our bodies are ecosystems and if we continue to pollute the external ecosystem we will do the same to our internal one. We must recognise this and fight to protect these resources. This #worldenvironmentday start using your voice and/or actions to be heard, and bring about change.
