Quante persone hanno un’allergia alimentare vera . . . Capita ormai quotidianamente di sentir dire a qualcuno “non posso mangiarlo, sono allergico”..ma quante persone soffrono davvero di allergia alimentare?❓ . . Uno studio ha analizzato i dati sanitari di 2,7 milioni di adulti statunitensi, individuando ben 97mila casi di persone che si erano recate in Pronto Soccorso o erano andati dal medico ‍⚕️per una reazione avversa presumibilmente causata dal cibo: orticaria, vomito, difficoltà respiratorie, starnuti, fino allo shock anafilattico☠️. . . La percentuale di persone con allergie al cibo è risultata solo del 3,6%, cioé meno di una persona su 25 ❗️❗️❗️, un numero inferiore a quanto si riteneva fino ad ora e a quello che ci aspetteremmo nell’immaginario comune. . . . Lumbar Puncture Practice ——— We practiced lumbar punctures for the first time yesterday. Not going to lie, it took me at least 4 tries for the “CSF“ to actually come out... practice makes perfect ❤️ This is just a short clip of the full procedure. There are many more steps to the procedure including betadine, injecting with lidocaine, measuring opening pressure etc. And of course would be wearing gloves and draping the patient with a sterile drape :) • • Indications: LP is done to rule in and rule out conditions like subarachnoid hemorrhage, meningitis, trauma, multiple sclerosis, etc. • Lumbar puncture is performed between either L2/L3 spinous process or L3/L4! • • What would you suspect if you saw xanthochromia in the CSF? A. Meningitis• B. Subarachnoid hemorrhage• C. Multiple sclerosis• D. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ╭ Instrument Pearls for Suturing ╮ ⠀ ⠀ ↠Hold the forceps like a pencil or a pair of chopsticks, not overhand. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ↠Hold the needle driver like a pair of scissors with your thumb and 4th digit in the loops. (This may vary based on the size of your hand) ⠀ ⠀ ↠Practice unlocking and locking the needle driver with both your right and left hand individually. Having that ambidexterity will make you versatile in the OR and at the bedside when performing procedures. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ↠When using scissors, keep the “bolt to the sky.” Place your pointer finger over the bolt and only open the scissors as far as is needed to cut the suture. This helps avoid unnecessary cuts or pokes to yourself or your colleagues. ⠀ ⠀ ↠Grasp your needle with the needle driver approximately 1/3 from the swaged end of the needle (where the thread leaves the needle). This may vary based on the size of bite you need to take. ⠀ ⠀ ↠Got more pearls to add?
