If I had a money tree, I’d fly first class and sleep five star. But they don’t exist, so I had to settle for a studio apartment with a shared balcony. And that’s how I spent the last three weeks living next door to a drug dealer. What I learnt is there’s a chain of command here. Mexico must be unique in how its blackmarket operates. Normally, illicit activity is kept quiet and tax free. But my next door neighbour gets taxed twice every month. First, a street-level cartel member came to collect a cut for whoever his boss is, and he gets to keep a small share for himself, apparently. A couple of days later, I was decompressing in my deck chair when a policemen walked past to collect his slice of the pie. Imagine a cartoon of a corrupt policeman, add 10kg, a second gun and a third chin, and that’s your guy. I overheard a few seconds of Spanish small talk. Then the door opened to reveal a dishonest smile, framed by well-fed cheeks. The policeman smiled at the plants growing green and high on our shared balcony. And I thought, sometimes money does grow on trees.
