Seed Trial 2. Swatches of painted, collaged, and stitched textiles (all repurposed scraps from utility, furnishing, and fashion industries). Randomly arranged, as if wildflower species: drifting, responding to context, making their own aesthetic. #liberating

“It makes me so happy... to be at the beginning again, knowing almost nothing...
“The ordinary-sized stuff which is our lives, the things people write poetry about —clouds—daffodils—waterfalls... these things are full of mystery, as mysterious to us as the heavens were to the Greeks... It’s the best possible time to be alive, when almost everything you thought you knew is wrong.”
— Tom Stoppard, “Arcadia”

There are two big ways to view new information and insights, new research and results:
1. Ignore, dismiss, pretend if we don’t really look at it, it’ll go away.
-
2. Embrace it fully. Lean in to it with unbridled interest and optimism.
—
Of course most of us are somewhere in-between. Having been through this now several times in my life/career, I joke that it’s like the Stages of Grief: denial, rage, bargaining, acceptance, etc.
But each and every time, my only regret is that I took soooo long to get to Acceptance.
—
Acceptance is the gateway to Awesome. The longer we ignore, deny, resist... the longer it takes to find the beauty, power, and freedom in the new perspective from science/art.
—
Letting go is f***ing hard.
Letting go of beliefs.
Letting go of assumptions.
Letting go of expectations.
Letting go of the security blanket of “certainty.”
Letting go of the narrative that justified our behavior (or behavior of others).
—
But hardest of all is this:
Letting go of practices we got good at. Letting go of that which “worked.”
—
To use the cliche... “but did it tho?”
Did it *really* work for us? The practices we used on ourselves, our family, our clients, our patients, our athletes, our animals... were they REALLY “working”?
—
It’s astonishing for me to look back and see how many things I came to accept in my career/life as “acceptable and normal.”
—
But one absolute truth — one shining thread — ran through it all —> after acceptance came awesome. Of course we fear change.
Of course we fear “new.”
We are biologically driven to safety and security.
And yet...
.
We never feel MORE alive than when we reach past our comfort zone of The Familiar, exploring new terrain, new experiences, new cultures, new ideas, new science, new dreams.
—
We got this.
