Extensive testing of paper and pigments will determine whether or not a watercolor painting can safely undergo aqueous treatment... in this case the media was stable and washing was effective at loosening the dark brown staining and overall paper discoloration. First shot, the painting during washing; second, the wash water after the process; third, the watercolor after washing. Stains are greatly reduced, but not gone yet... the next step will be local chemical bleaching to nudge the last of the staining out. . Parchment is a very hygroscopic material, meaning it is water-loving and therefore cockles easily in high humidity. To mitigate this, a special mounting system is used in conservation framing of parchment documents, which places light but even tension around the perimeter, keeping the document gently flat. The sealed framing package creates a microclimate for the piece, further protecting it from abrupt changes in environment that could cause expansion and contraction. This beautiful example had a large, intact wax seal which we mounted with pins in the shadowbox frame to safely display it in all its glory.
