Do you reach for oats on weekends by default? Doing as little cooking as possible sounds appealing, doesn't it? . Have you thought about how sustainable the grain is? . Oats originated in the Near East (Western Asia, Turkey, Egypt) and was first domesticated in regions of the Middle East and Europe. . The crop is cultivated in temperate regions and require low summer heat, while having greater tolerance of rain. . Currently, the European Union leads the producer of oats, followed by Russia and Canada. . Crushed oatmeal and rolled oats are suitable forms for human consumption but their primary use is to feed livestock. Nevertheless, oats has been a popular ingredient in human diet across European countries. . In India, oat is an introduced crop, grown only in colder states. In the Himalayan regions, particularly J&K, oats has been a successful crop as it allows for extending the growing season and hence increases farmer revenue. But the production is only enough to sustain local needs, typically as fodder. . This means that almost all the Oats we humans consume in India is imported, thereby having a huge carbon footprint due to the extensive food miles the grain travels. . To address this, choose a locally produced cereal that matches the ease and nutrition offered by oats. Millets are my best choice. They are cultivated across India and are easily available across the country. That means lesser food milage than oats. Need more reasons to quit oats? More info is coming in the following weeks! . For this week's recipe, I made a millet bowl using raw Barnyard millet (kuthiraivali). Parboiled grain will cook faster. I cooked it for about 10-12 minutes in a regular steel vessel. Then I added milk (Choose your consistency) and some jaggery and let it boil. I topped the finished porridge with walnuts and bananas. You can also use a vegan milk. .
