It’s the Franciscan “Desert Rose” pattern I inherited from my grandmother. Desert Rose was made in California in the 1930’s and 40’s, when my grandmother was a young bride. Did you know that tulip petals are poisonous to cats I didn’t. I can’t keep houseplants because Madeleine, our sweet calico housecat, is practically vegan. (Thank goodness we have a ten month growing season outdoors here!) Madeleine eats any plant I leave available, yet refuses salmon and rotisserie chicken. Her favorite toy is an avocado pit. And she is the world’s best caretaker of baby chicks. It’s a REALLY good thing she didn’t end up being the mouser, barn cat, I had thought she would be. I couldn’t resist the lovely pink tulips on sale for Valentine’s Day. Apparently neither could Madeleine. She scarfed down a dropped petal this morning. After calls to our vet - who told us to call poison control - who told us they don’t DO cat poison control, but gave us the number to animal poison control - who charge $59 to talk to a live person (!) so I just googled it instead, I decided she’d survive. It was only one petal. My sweet, extremely sensitive, sixth grader was EXTREMELY worried. She now knows that a whole tulip bulb can be fatal to a cat! 24 hours, and a few tween tears, later, Madeleine is fine. She didn’t throw up. She ate well, she’s playing with her toys. Eloise, our tuxedo cat, has vigilantly cuddled with Madeleine on the sofa all day. By the way, I haven’t forgotten about our Welsummer hen, Titania, and her bumblefoot. She doesn’t seem much bothered by it, and, after doing some more reading, and listening to all of your advice, I decided to wait a couple of days to see if the swelling goes down on its own. I always kind of wanted to be a doctor, (my dad was, and I loved going on rounds with him when I was a little girl), I’m not too squeamish at the idea of surgery, and a little fascinated to see if it works. But incisions always run the risk of infection. Plus, the pain, and separation from her flock, while she recovers, would undoubtedly cause some stress for Titania. This sweet, newborn, still wet, chick has splayed legs. Her legs are turned out too far at the hip joint. So, even though her legs are healthy and strong, they can’t support her weight. This happens sometimes in the shell, or at hatch. It’s not uncommon. But, since this our first time hatching our own eggs, it’s my first real-world experience with this. She scoots around on her bottom. If we leave her with the other chicks, in the kindergarten classroom, she’s likely to be trampled, or not able to reach food and water. So, Daisy and I are taking this little one home, to give her some extra care. The truth is, I don’t exactly hate having a baby chick to take care of. A follower sent me this picture of their daughter and her chickens, which was SO cute I just had to share it with y’all! This is four year old Ariel. Isn’t she just completely adorable I LOVE it! Thank you for sharing it with me, and everyone else, John N Beverly McCormack! Also, this sweet little girl’s name is ARIEL!!! (As in “The Little Mermaid”, But ALSO as in the magical fairy in “The Tempest”. ‍♀️‍♀️‍♂️) Some of you may have noticed that all my chickens are named after Shakespeare characters. I’m kind of a Shakespeare geek. The new pullets are Portia, Thisbe, Titania, and Rosencranz (changed from Rosalyn when Rosie turned out to be a rooster.) But we still have one pullet, who we hadn’t found the perfect name for yet. We are absolutely naming that chicken Ariel after your beautiful daughter!!! ❤️❤️❤️ P.S.
