Hollow vs Round. When the horse is not round it is not trained towards longitudinal flexion, the natural hollowing reflex is triggered by the riders weight, causing the back to drop, and the haunches to become disengaged. The hollowing is often disguised by making the horse come round in front, but the haunches remain disengaged, and there is little transmission of power from behind. This posture is damaging to the horse over time, and can never lead to true collection. Postural engagement creates longitudinal flexion of the horse’s spine, building under the rider.
