Few castles look as impregnable as Dunnottar! . On the Scottish East Coast, Dunnottar castle sits on a headland, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land and surrounded by 50m cliffs. Dunnottar played many roles during Scottish history but one of the most famous stories is the Defence of the Honours of Scotland. . The Honours are a jewel-encrusted crown, elaborate sword and a sceptre, dating from the late 1400’s / early 1500’s. . In 1651, Cromwell’s New Model Army laid siege to the castle, bringing to bear his formidable heavy cannons, attempting to destroy the castle and take the Honours. Prior to this, the Parliamentarians had ordered the majority of English crown jewels to be melted down and made into coins! . Dunnottar held out against the siege for an incredible eight months before falling… but not before the Honours of Scotland were smuggled away and hidden further down the coast! .
