Here's the next step in making that wide bowl that I started the other day! This was a fairly long carving process, (about 45 minutes) so I had to split it up into three videos inorder to make any sense of what I was doing. Inorder to carve this bowl, I made a tool out of a bent scalpel blade and I also used a little carving tool that I had in my tool collection. I carved the rings with the little tool, and then moved onto the patterns with the scalpel. All of this carving was done on the drier side of leather hard so I could achieve a clean line without creating clay dust. The downside to this is that it leaves a powdery residue where the shavings were crushed by my hand. Inorder to fix this, I will wait for the bowl to dry and then sponge the excess clay off. I will show a video of this on Thursday. :) This is my first time trying sgraffito and I was kind of winging it, but I think the pattern came out fairly nice. What are your opinions on it? Enjoy! Over the past few days, I have received several messages asking to show how I made the platter that I carved in last week’s videos. I suppose I should have clarified a bit more when I said it was made with a slab. While it is possible to throw a platter like this without a mold or a slab of clay, I chose to use this method because the hands-on time of this process is fairly quick and it gives me a consistent shape if I want to make a series of these bowls. In order to make one of these platters, I start with a 1/4 inch thick slab (around 1.5 cm) of clay and I drape it over a mold that was made by @theceramicshop. Next, I use some water and my fingers to smooth the piece of clay onto the surface of the mold. After that, I use a pin tool to cut the slab into a circular shape and I score a ring on the center of the convex slab. Finally, I add a coil of clay to the scored ring and throw it into the shape of a foot. The only downside to this technique, is that I have to wait overnight to remove the piece from the mold or else it will be too soft and collapse. Otherwise, if you would like to make a consistent shape of pottery and you have some time to wait for it to come off of the mold, I would highly recommend this process! I often get asked why crystalline pottery is more expensive than other types of pottery. One of the main reasons is because of all of the excess material and time it takes to make glaze catchers. Each piece of pottery gets a glaze catcher that fits perfectly on the bottom of the pot to catch the runny crystalline glaze. After the pottery comes out of the glaze kiln, the glaze catcher is broken off and discarded. Because of the need for these pedestals, I have to do 1 extra bisque firing just for the glaze catchers. In this video, I am throwing catchers off of a 40 pound hump of clay. I used every last bit of this clay for the pedestals that are going to be used with my most recent batch of pots. I'm a little bit rusty on the wheel after not have thrown for a few weeks, but I think this video can teach a few things. I feel that this video serves as a good demonstration of how I collar my bottles. You’ll notice that it is done in alternating stages of collaring the clay with the space between my pointer finger and thumb, and pulling up the walls of the neck. I do this because when the clay is squeezed in, it becomes thicker, and by pulling up, it helps to keep the walls a consistent thickness. This technique is great at adding height to your collared neck, but sometimes, if your clay is too wet, or you pull the neck too thin, it can create a wobble in the lip of the pot. This is a very minor problem that can easily be remedied with a pin tool and a steady hand. All it takes is a gradual cut inwards and once the lip  has been evened out, the uneven clay can be lifted up in a ring. Hope this helps out!
