A few of you were curious of that “world famous potter” that I mentioned in yesterday’s post... well, I got to meet Ben Owen (@benowenpottery)! A few month ago @ceramicmaterialsworkshop showed me a far superior way of making my test tiles. Using this popsicle mold I’m able to save 123 grams per tile, which for me is about 300lbs of clay saved a year. With the price of my porcelain, this saves me a ton of money. Also, next week starts a new glaze class at @ceramicmaterialsworkshop I’ll be taking this class because you can never know enough to stop learning. Who’s taking this class with me?!? Quick tutorial about crystalline refires! . Crystalline is tricky and you’re not always going to get it right the first time, but it is possible to refire with good results. The main challenge to overcome is getting the glaze to stick to the pot. I do this by heating the piece to 200 degrees- this causes the water in the glaze to evaporate rapidly and the glaze will dry pretty much instantly. This works best for instances in which you got too few crystals; all things being the same, the glaze tends to crystallize more the second time around. Okay, y'all- you know at this point that I love sharing practical advice with you about the nitty gritty day-to-day of running a pottery studio, so I hope you'll forgive me the interruption from clay related content as I show you...how to pack your work for shipping so it gets to its destination in one piece! I got an order for this piece (one of my very favorites) last night, and it's incredibly delicate, so it needs to be packed really carefully. Take a look at the video, and then heed my top tips: 1. Don't expect the post office to baby your package. You need to pack it so it can essentially survive being thrown across a room. 2. Make sure you have 2" of clearance on every side of your piece. 3. Always pack along the hypotenuse- it enables you to use a smaller box while still maintaining your two inches of clearance, since it's longer than any given side of the box (geometry, people!) 4. Once your piece is packed in bubble wrap, squeeze every side gently- you shouldn't be able to feel anything hard. 5. Better to overfill than underfill with packing peanuts- the less the piece can move around within the package, the safer it is. 6. Buy your bubble wrap in bulk! I get mine from a local business to business company and it's about $60 for enough bubble wrap to essentially fill my minivan. I usually buy boxes at Walmart- a box like this is 75 cents versus $3.50 or so at Office Max or similar. I hope this is useful!
