Documentary about Cuban Civil Society, #RethinkingCubanCivilSociety, available now @IcarusFilms. “Cuba is an easy country to get wrong. It is a testament to María Isabel Alfonso's abilities as an interviewer and a thinker that she identified so many of the most important commentators in the debates in Cuban civil society, and won their trust to be interviewed on camera on this topic. Those who teach Cuban studies will definitely find the documentary useful, but so too will the general public, particularly in the U.S., because it sheds light on a conversation in Cuba which receives insufficient attention in the media.” —Karen Dubinsky, Queens University” #CivilSociety #Cubancivilsociety #Cuba #cuba #nohumanisillegal #cubanlink #cuba_gallery #cubanculture #cubanpolitics #cubausa #cuban #cubandocumentary #cubandocumentaries #globalsociety #usforeignpolicy #usstatedepartment #uscongress #potus #latinamericaregional #caribbean #ussenate

A trip to Miami isn’t complete until you’ve rubbed shoulders with #gloriaestefan at @thecolonytheatre in #SOBE at the #worldpremier of #Fake. Given I am in town with @usantiqueshows for the #originalmiamibeachantiqueshow it was a fitting we were watching a new #Miamidrama about #artsandantiques! Written by Cuban-American playwright and Miami native #CarmenPelaez, this play thrusts us into the world of high stakes #art dealing, #Cubanpolitics, and a thrilling pursuit for the truth. Amidst cut-throat competition at a renowned #auctionhouse, Camila has just been promoted as the head of the Latin American Art Department when she is presented with one of her great-aunt Amelia Pelaez's paintings as a last minute inclusion. The authenticity of the painting is questionable, Camila's dedication to her great Aunt is not, forcing Camila to decide between her own burgeoning career and Amelia's legacy. #theater #playwrite #miamibeach #divalifestyle #comeonshakeyourbody special thanks to @olga.c.granda for this amazing opportunity, my cohorts in crime tonight included @mignettesmom @parisbug @lolofrenchantiques @mitchellhillcharleston @nancypriceinteriordesign @veradjonovic and @world_of_ronati #OMBAS

Yesterday... . . ...a referendum was held in Cuba. Si pur el socialismo? Interesting times in Cuba. Not everyone is content with the status quo especially the “grandchild generation”. Some Cubans no longer speak in whispers and are now able to use social media to express their dissension. . #yovotono #yovotosi #cubareferendum #cubanpolitics #alternatepress #newconstitution #newgeneration #noesfacil

La verdad de la verdad es... que nunca es una. Ni la mía. Ni la de el. Ni la tuya. - A Cuban quoted this lyric to point out how he doesn't like the whole "who's the Cubanest Cuban" contest that so many try to hold to invalidate each other's differing opinions. "But you left Cuba at age X!" Or "But you've never left Cuba, so you don't know what's out there!" Or "But you're not even Cuban so what could you know!" - I've witnessed it all go down in these hot debates. Personally, I love diversity of opinion and insight. I enjoy comparative economic /political studies and the exchanging of ideas. I'd never try to invalidate someone's constructive observation or input of DR/DR culture/US/US culture just because they weren't from those countries. Lots of people have put me in my place pointing out my own blind spots of U.S. faults that they could see from the outside but I couldn't see being from the inside. Also, sometimes people of that same culture don't agree so it's not necessarily a must that someone be from a country to have the "valid" input. Sometimes it completes the picture when various perspectives come together from outside and within (so long as the outside isn't ignoring/overpowering the within). And sometimes... the truth is just relative. - Que opinan? Happy to hear contradicting/diverse insight to this stance - #travelthoughts #varela #listen #Camaguey #Cuba #Cubatravel #camagueycuba #cubanart #centralcuba #cubanroadtrip #cubanpolitics #comparativepolitics

A Cuban once argued that living in the Dominican Republic is way better than Cuba. He said, despite the struggles, there is more freedom in DR. I asked him what’s easier: being the poorest Dominican in DR or the poorest Cuban in Cuba? He countered that at least the poorest Dominican can have some hope to somehow rise high in his country one day without the government taking it all away for saying the wrong thing. We could have gone on and on in theoretical circles. So I wondered what my life would have been like if my family had grown up in Cuba instead of DR. What struggles would have been alleviated? More security, social programs, access to free education, and the time/free resources to explore other creative passions. Which new ones would we have acquired? One-sided thinking/1984, heavy control, scarcity (besides the embargo, Cuba also shoots itself in the foot), loss of agricultural culture, stagnation, inability to move upwards, loss of all our farming lands to the state. I think trying to compare two ends of the spectrum: full-on communism vs. unregulated capitalism, security vs. freedom, free speech vs. free education, is like trying to choose between a broken leg or a broken arm. Or between having air or water. But it IS interesting to try to measure how much politics and history limit/strengthen/affect who/how we are today. And I think DR and Cuba would make for SUPER interesting comparative case studies. They both (generally speaking) have what the other is weak in. DR: world master agriculturalists, freedom to do whatever you want. Cuba: strong security, free higher education for all. Both: Screwed over by the US. Cuba - embargo since the 60s. DR - twice invaded by the US after the US government thought DR was next in line for its own revolution. Both had dictators that were once backed by the US: Batista and Trujillo. And both are still trying to rise from the aftermath of US intervention. I think both countries (about 100 miles apart) would benefit greatly from each other. A dream of mine is to one day see a collaboration between the two countries for mutual growth. How cool would that be?
