"Spending my childhood preparing for the Apocalypse exacted a price on my ability to trust, particularly in the concept of family." An incredible essay from @michelledowdz on leaving the cult she was raised in—and finding chosen family after losing her biological one. Follow the link in our bio or Stories for more!
New interview up! Emily sits down with me to talk about her experience as part of a branch of the Hebrew Roots or Sacred Name Movement, an evangelical christian cult environment that has several iterations, but all of which assume various Jewish/Arab/Semitic customs out-of-context and with little real respect for their history, meaning, and sacred cultural tradition. • link in bio • #survivorseries #survivorsguilt #cultreligion #exvangelical #tellyourstory #youmatter #noqualifiersneeded #notalone #yournotalone #cptsd #mentalhealth #coachinglife #creativepreneur #projects #womenhelpingwomen #empoweredwomen #yeswecan #radicalselflove #cult #cultsurvivor #survivorculture #cptsdrecovery #religioustraumasyndrome #spiritualjourney #journeytorecovery #freedomfromreligion #christianityexplored #homechurch #churchhome #hebrewroots
*SOLD* I’ve been giving a lot of thought to what to call my kinetic jewelry. To me, there’s a lot more to it than “it moves.” But it’s been a challenge to articulate the “more.” I ask myself “Why is what I am doing important to me? Why do I design my jewelry the way I do?” I’ve tried to venture out of the rigid geometric structure and play with the kinetic elements more but I can’t seem to break free. -
For the past 6 years or so I have been immersed in trauma recovery as I realized I was born and raised in a cult and my father’s suicide when I was only 3 was directly tied to my parent’s involvement in the cult. When being faced with these hard realities it’s been necessary to ask myself how those experiences influenced my internal structuring and the way I function in the world. -
The book The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk has been a helpful guide on my path to health. I recently revisited my copy and read on the first line of the epilogue “We are on the verge of becoming a trauma-conscious society.” And I thought, Yes! I want to be a part of THAT. I want to do my part to contribute to the awareness and healing of trauma. -
The world is a scary place for those that have experienced trauma, and I’ll go so far as to say we all have (in varying degrees), whether we’re willing/able to acknowledge it or not. It is my hope that my jewelry can be a tangible harbor for those who are facing their trauma in order to heal. An anchor that provides just a bit of structure and security while being a reminder that it can be safe to let go and trust yourself as you come back to the present moment. -
There’s a lot more to develop here but I think this a good place to start. Happy healing.

"Well... you're kind of an asshole..." Seriously that best coffee mug ever! Perfect for trolling social media and correcting the Hun's misguided and false information. So thankful for beautiful and thoughtful friends who always seem to know the perfect gift to get me. Thanks Amanda! CALLING FOR A COMMUNITY FOR SURVIVOR EXPLORERS...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’ve been quiet here lately b/c I’ve been doing a ton of thinking about what it is I want to do, what I can offer, and who I want to empower in this world.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ya know, just the little things
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Next Tues, it will be EXACTLY 2 YEARS since I came out to my Chinese American, Evangelical parents... by accident, like the Kool Aid Man.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2 years since 1 life ended, and another began.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Stories are like tuning forks, and every week I get new messages from people who resonate with mine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We come from 3 areas: we’re seeking life beyond former faiths, LGBTQ-unsupportive families, and/or mental illness identities.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But you know what? We all have something in common: our beliefs are transforming, + so are we.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I can’t stop thinking: WHY NOT DO IT TOGETHER?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So I have a new mission: to create curious community, resources, and hope for anyone reimagining life beyond those 3 worlds.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Starting on my anniversary NEXT TUES, I’m launching all new content (like speaking events, videos, + a Facebook group). Keep an eye out...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I wanted you to know. I want you to be here. I want you to be a part of it — of us.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fellow survivor explorers, you’re my people. I can’t wait to see what we build together.
“Let me look at you”
Holding space for someone and allowing them to be seen is one of the most beautiful gifts we can give another person.
I’ve learned to treasure every person that I’ve felt comfortable enough to receive that gift from. But it’s a gift that must be built on intuition and trust.
Sadly we still live in a society where our true selves need to be protected. Sometimes abusers wear the faces of lovers, family or friends.
So I hope that each of us is able to find a safe harbor where our trust is reciprocated in the gift of being truly seen.
The Weight of Your Story
We all carry hurts, scars and traumas within us. Sometimes they are so deep that we think that they will always define us.
Often we are offered platitudes intended to help: it wasn’t so bad, get over it, it was God’s will. My favorite (#sarcasm) was “your soul chose this path before you were born because it knew you needed this lesson.” While I want to acknowledge the growth that can occur after trauma (often in spite of it and not because of it) I know that most of us prefer our growth to occur without the pains.
So today I offer no platitude, no advice. I simply honor your strength for still being here, bearing up under the weight of your story
@uproxx interviewed me about cults for Far Cry 5, which is about one. Glad they were going for a deeper, more personal understanding of cults, as opposed to sensationalizing the reality of them.
