Did you know that you get a serotonin dump every time you’re right about something? Even when what you’re right about is to your detriment like you’re going to get fired, your partner is cheating, that you are sure to fail the test, or that you’ll never find a good partner. This sure-fire feedback loop does nothing but keep us addicted to our fear and failure patterns, forever regressing to feel and re-feel the THRILL of accuracy. Why would I ever risk being wrong if I could ensure my rightness AND my serotonin fix by simply falling into a familiar pattern? By proving to myself and to others that I was right all along. The words “This shit always happens to me!” should sound all too familiar to the majority of humans. The fact that this process lies in the UNconscious mind only makes matters worse, keeping us utterly baffled by the plight of our concurrent and repetitious path. And so the solution lies in seeking consistent experiences that contradict our current understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Once the contradictory experiences are so abundant that they overwhelm past knowledge we are mathematically guaranteed a paradigm shift. Sounds easy right? It’s just math. The path to awareness, however, is one that moves away from the fix. No more fix. Ever been addicted to heroin? Might as well be. Thank God for growth produced by failure. The obsession. The craving. The battle within myself to drink or not to drink. Today I was heading out to run some simple errands and while on the freeway it hits me. Vodka sounds good. I could just go to the store put in some OJ and no one would know. Just a small amount. Just to take this edge off. Just to help me relax a bit. Just to be ok. I’m an adult I can do this! (Arguing with myself) I could feel it going into my mouth and down my throat. The slight burn from the vodka because of course there is more vodka than orange juice. I could feel my knees relaxing and the warmth in my shoulders. It truly glorified itself in this attack. All of this happened in a span of 60 seconds. It scares me sometimes That I can be 5 years sober and this beast still taunts me. This disease is the only disease that tells you that you don’t have a disease. What if I let my guard down? What if one day I’m not strong enough? What if one day I fail? To those who are struggling with sobriety please know i understand. While my beast doesn’t come around to say hello as much as it used to, it still shows up. It’s still cunning, baffling and powerful. It’s still waiting for me and it grows stronger every day even when I don’t engage. May I always remember to respect my beast because all it wants is one yes and I’m done. Not today Satan.
