"Sometimes in my youth, the war returned to Dad in the night. I heard his nightmares and his shouts. Mom always said not to bother him and to 'let him be.' I was scared. When things were tough for him, he would just say, 'The war is talking to me today. So, don’t take it personally.'”⠀

Today we spent a little time at the Normandy Cemetery in Colleville. We had a beaitiful ceremony with our two 83rd Division veterans. I was also able to use some of the Omaha Beach sand to rub in the names and make them easier to see. This is a common thing to do on the cemetery. As usual I paid tribute to a soldier of the 5th Infantry Division. Unfortunately, I have no photograph of Conway, but he was killed near Hill 183 on July 30, 1944.
Wishing a wonderfully Happy Birthday to Easy Company's Staff Sergeant Rod Strohl who celebrates his 97th birthday today.
Roderick G. Strohl was born June 24, 1922, in Philadelphia. He grew up in Fogelsville, PA, with childhood friends Forrest Guth and Carl Fenstermaker, and in 1942 all three volunteered for the paratroopers together. They were sent to Camp Toccoa and placed in 3rd platoon, Easy Company, 506th PIR.
On DDay, Rod made the jump into Normandy. It was his camera that was used to take some of the infamous pictures depicting Easy Co in the days following the jump. He was wounded on June 13 when shrapnel from a mortar blast hit him. He was moved to Utah Beach to be evacuated to England.
On September 16th, still recovering in hospital, he got a 1 day pass from the doctor and hitched a ride to Aldbourne. He met Captain Sobel who told him the unit were about to make a jump into Holland. Rod told him he wanted to make the jump and Sobel gave him a lift to the airfield. He said "I was as weak as a kitten" but he made the jump and took part in the campaign.
He was wounded during the initial Crossroads patrol, with his radio being blown away by a grenade.
Rod remained with Easy until the end of the war, fighting through Bastogne, and on to Germany and Austria.
After the war he returned home, married, and worked with his father selling cars.
He can be seen in the veteran's interviews in the Band of Brothers miniseries and documentary and is featured in the book We Who Are Alive and Remain. ♠♠

When my grandfather was a kid he lived at a place called Wells Shoals at the base of Currahee Mountain in Banks County, Georgia. When he was 12 and 13 years old he remembers the men of the 501st and 506th Parachute Infantry Regiments training at Camp Toccoa, just a couple miles from his home. Many of those men made the jump into Normandy in the early morning hours of June 6th, 1944, 75 years ago today. From our peach orchard in Franklin County we had a perfect view of Currahee Mountain and we often talked about the men of Camp Toccoa and their involvement in preserving our freedom so long ago. We felt a special connection to those men who trained there. To him, myself, and to so many others, the men involved in D-Day and the subsequent push from Normandy to the heart of Germany are heroes and I’m so glad in joining the millions who honor them today, 75 years later. As fate would have it, my grandfather passed away 2 years ago today, on a day that he revered and respected so much. -Peach State Pride Founder, Derek Chitwood #Currahee #camptoccoa #BandofBrothers #DDay #75years #alwaysremember #passiton #peachstatepride #trueamerican
