Change. Change has always been something I struggle with. I am the epitome of what many may call ‘a creature of habit’. I am also a collector of sentimental things, which many may call ‘a hoarder’. Needless to say, these two qualities have probably been the reason I have not cut my hair in over twelve years. Long hair was my comfort, what I was use to, and what had been ‘a part’ of me for so long. It was with me when I traveled overseas to Nepal to teach English and to help with the rice harvest. My long hair was there with me when I packed up and moved to the mountains after college. It was right there with me when I cried my eyes out over heartbreak and heartaches. It was my dance partner, always along for every adventure, my constant. My long hair was with me the day I found my true love and the day I walked down the isle to say, ‘I do’. Every little memory, long hair was there with me. As hard as change can be, sometimes it’s needed, and a lot of times, it turns into such a beautiful thing. My long hair is not mine anymore. While Niah was in my belly, her dad let his hair grow really long to donate it. When Niah turned 2, I got pregnant again and let my hair grow very long, to also donate it. We shared this story with her when she was little and Niah told us that she wanted to do the same with her hair. So for a few years, she let her hair grow super long... Every morning she had to deal with hair knots that became tears more than once... with long blow dries every time her hair was washed,... with her little baby sister Kira pulling her hair lots of times... Her beautiful and Rapunzel style hair was cut with a purpose: Donating it to @cwhl_org Children With Hair Loss, a non-profit organization that provides human hair to children and young adults facing medically-related hair loss (cancer treatments, alopecia, burns,...). I couldn’t wait to have a little daughter with long pretty hair...and then one day she came home from school and said, “mommy I want to give my hair to someone else who needs it, just cut it up to my ears.” At first I thought she wasn’t serious. Then I thought the idea would pass. I tried talking her out if it. Brother heard us and made a comment about how she would look like a boy (which I had a talk with him later lol) but it didn’t bother her anyway. She wasn’t concerned with the sacrifice, she was motivated by love. If this is what God put in her heart to do, then that is what we will follow! Twelve inches and she looks cute as ever!
