A Dakini is a term in Sanskrit generally interpreted as "she who flies through the sky". Related forms of the word appear as Dagini & Sankini - "she who is powerful" Further Tibetan insight translates as "she who flies everywhere in the limitless limits of the realms of space". Therefore a Dakini is best rendered as a "sky dancer" - as the Dakini is often depicted dancing, and limitless : as in, the sky From her earliest depictions her powers of flight were important although she was not always seen flying, for this reason we too examine the meaning of sky and dancer beyond merely literal According to Tibetan commentaries, sky meaning limitless also means emptiness. In this context, a Dakini awakens the experience of groundlessness and lack of reference point through her soaring in the space or sky. She abides nowhere but arises continually in the practitioners experiences as an emblem of space Her name also in Tibetan - "khandroma" - indicates movement and life itself - "dro". And emptiness is not mere blankness but a mode of being, in which manifestations arise freely, never compromising the power of emptiness. In fact, manifestation in the case of the Dakini aids the practitioner for she points out the dynamic of emptiness in phenomena through her very being The quality of movement is one of her most consistent traits, and it refers not only to the movement of her physical form but also her ability to change form and appear and disappear at will. The emblematic expression of movement is found in iconographic depictions of her dancing, stepping forward, or flying.
