The dap is more than just a handshake, it’s a symbol of solidarity, one with origins tracing back to young Black American soldiers stationed abroad during the Vietnam War. With racism prevalent in the military and a new Black consciousness emerging during the civil rights movement, the young soldiers developed a physical language as a gesture of unity. Thus was born the dap, an acronym for “Dignity and Pride.” #BlackHistoryMonth

DAPLINE! A Theatrical Premiere | Tonight
Hailed as “rich in emotional nuance and gestural beauty” and one of the best dance shows of 2015 by the New York Times, Dapline! is a choreographic collaboration between LaMont Hamilton and André M. Zachery stemming from Hamilton’s project, Five on the Black Hand Side. Both projects are long form meditations on the ritual handshake, "the DAP", a conduit for black identity and solidarity and easily interpreted as an acronym for dignity and pride.

A snapshot of #DAPLINE!—flowing pass #GlennLigon's "Give Us a Poem (Palindrome #2)", 2007—bringing its unyielding message of community and solidarity to life. It is the way #we remember #MuhammadAli every day as we channel his poetics and passion in our work. #studiomuseum #MEWE #repost via @nicowheadon

Dapline! is a dance piece created in collaboration between choreographer André M. Zachery (@amzrpg) and visual artist LaMont Hamilton (@lamonthamilton). The piece looks at the origins and continued practice of “the DAP” or dapping; the intricate handshakes developed by Black combat troops during the Vietnam War.
