Today is Day 29 of the #mayvinylchallenge from @jennn_erator. Today’s theme is BLACK SHEEP / GUILTY PLEASURE . Spin Doctors - Pocket Full of Kryptonite (1991) . My name is Champ Vinyl and I like the Spin Doctors. I’m sorry I’m not sorry. I remember seeing these guys in the early 90’s at NYC and they put on the most amazing shows at least that’s how I’m remembering it. The chances are you probably know these guys from their two overexposed singles “Two Princess” and “Little Miss Can’t be Wrong”. These guys didn’t just manufacture incessantly catchy radio friendly tunes, they helped usher in the second jam band wave. Their live show were legendary and very often included collaborations with other up and coming bands such as Blues Traveler. That band’s lead singer/blues harp man John Popper was actually in an early iteration of Spin Doctors before dropping out to do Blues Traveller full time. For me, this album is very much tied to the initial exposure of live music which occurred in outrageous 2 hr sets. I was also underage so just getting into shows was half the fun. . Anyway, the "classic" Spin Doctors period was 1990 through maybe 1993, when the band was really firing on all cylinders. Then the whole thing deflated when Eric Schenkman, their guitarist, unceremoniously quit the band in the middle of a tour. Well, they took some time before hiring Anthony Krizan, who did a pretty good impersonation of Eric (he even sort of looked like him), and filled the slot pretty well -- they wrote a whole batch of new songs and did weekly runs at their old lower Manhattan haunts (the Wetlands Preserve and Nightingales). I’ve must have seen Schenkman sit in with a half dozen bands over the years including BT and Black Crowes and he delivers. I think he’s fairly underrated. . This album offers a distinct blend of funk, rock and pop. These guys were the first “live band” to edit their improvisational skills and craft concrete, accessible songs for an LP. Phish and Dave Matthews would soon follow suit. Depending on how you feel about that this album is either a revelation or the worst thing to happen to music for about 10 years. . ’91 It wasn’t pressed in the US until ‘14
