Once we ate our way through the savoury dishes of the Nuremberg Christmas Markets, we obviously had to move on to the sweets.
Firstly we went straight for a Hot Chocolate. There isn’t many drinks that bring more joy in winter than hot chocolate, especially when it’s alcohol-infused. Ours was spiked with Bailey’s and was the perfect alcohol to chocolate ratio. This heart-warming drink gets a 9/10, it would have been a 10/10 if they had Frangelico as spiked hot Chocolate with hazelnut liquor is like liquid Nutella (would highly recommend trying this combo if the opportunity presents itself). The next thing we simple HAD to try in Nuremberg was the gingerbread, or Lebkuchen as they call it. Nuremberg is particularly famous for their Lebkuchen, so we took this is a sign that we needed to try as much as we could possibly fit in our stomach. The traditional Lebkuchen comes in a plain, glazed, chocolate and extra nutty version. Would definitely recommend the glazed version. Moist, chewy and perfectly-spiced, this is gingerbread at its best. 9.5/10, the only thing that could improve it is if it was fresh from the oven.
Our exploration of the German Christmas Markets were filled with many a healthy treat, including all the cheesy and fried goods in sight. Although Nuremberg’s markets mostly consisted of stalls selling Bratwurst (not the best for two vegetarians), we did managed to find a few meat-free treats to nom on.
The first was Flammkuchen, which is the German hybrid of a pizza and a flat bread. It’s basically a thin, crispy base topped with cheese, vegetables and/ or meats and baked in the oven. In our case, we went for mozzarella, tomato and basil. I enjoyed how large and thin the base was (all the more space for toppings), however did find the flavour of our particular one a little lacking. It gets a 7/10
Next up was Langos, which is actually one of my favourite Hungarian indulgences. It’s basically fried dough topped with cheese and sour cream, and it’s as delicious as it sounds. It’s the perfect drunk/ hangover food, although in our case we weren’t either so felt like straight heart attack but a tasty one at that. Straight 9/10 for this fried + cheesy goodness.
Finally we also had feuerzangenbowle, which is basically mulled wine on steroids. Basically, they take regular mulled wine, top it with a sugar cube soaked in rum, and set the sugar on fire. The result? A very alcoholic-tasting mulled wine. It is certainly not for the faint hearted. It gets a solid 8/10 for keeping us warm in negative temperatures ❄️
