This Roseate was showing off for Bob Panozzo at the Refuge. Did you know there are six species of Spoonbills throughout the world? The Roseate Spoonbill is the only species with a deep pink color. We’re lucky to be home to bowls of Roseate Spoonbills.

We don't just have baby birds here at the Refuge - we sometimes spot baby bobcats too! Did you know? Baby bobcats stick around their mother and travel with her when they are about three to five months old. Once they turn one, they begin hunting alone and become completely independent. Diane Doran saw this immature Bald Eagle at the Bailey Tract. Juveniles spend the first four years of their lives exploring vast territories and can fly hundreds of miles per day. Some young birds from Florida have been found as far north as Michigan. : Diane Doran

#tbt to January of 2016 when we had an unlikely visitor to the island. This American Flamingo made a guest appearance in the waters of Sanibel. A common misconception is for people to call Roseate Spoonbills, Flamingos. Although they are the only two pink birds in North America they are different species. Is this spoonbill eating or checking it’s reflection? Roseate spoonbills typically eat minnows, small crustaceans, insects, and bits of plants. They tend to feed early in the morning or later in the evening. : David Jeffrey
