I had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with Dr. Janice Gassam (@janicejnice) on this Forbes article to discuss the lack of diversity in academia! As professors of underrepresented demographics, we completely resonate with this issue and it was very fitting to provide some insight into this piece! I'm truly blessed and grateful to be cited/acknowledged on Forbes.com! (Swipe left ) ——————————— Feel free to check out the article! #proud #Repost @women.doing.science with @make_repost ・・・ @science_phd_creative recently defended her PhD thesis and is now officially Dr Amal Hassan. Amal has a bachelors and masters in industrial biotechnology, focusing on the use of embryonic stem cells for regenerative medicinal applications (mainly cardiovascular diseases). This sparked her interest in academia and she continued her studies in a crystallography lab. Here, she worked on understanding the structure/function relationship of pathological proteins for a drug discovery approach. For her postdoc in Hamburg she is investigating peroxisomes, small organelles useful in many metabolic pathways. Amal hopes this study will further the mechanistic understanding of rare, complicated diseases. She is often inspired by Steve Jobs and his iconic quote “the only way to do great work is to love what you do.” . . . . #womendoingscience #womeninstem #biology #biotechnology #stemcellresearch #biochemistry #diversityinstem #arabic

How will you bring diversity to our school ~ This secondary question is challenging and, in my opinion, can be answered many ways. First, if you identify as a member of a minority or underrepresented group in medicine (ethnic, racial, linguistic, LGBTQ+, and more). Naturally, these may be what you include in your essay! Beyond describing this, I believe it adds value to talk about how your background contributed to who you are, your values, and what you’ve done because of your diversity. I.e, if you come from a Peruvian background and immigrated to the US as a child, you might talk about your ethnicity, your Spanish language skills, and how you used your experiences to connect with Hispanic patients at a local clinic. It seems tricky to answer this question if you do not identify with a group underrepresented in medicine. In circumstances where your diversity doesn’t stem from your cultural heritage, think outside of the box about what you contribute. Having diverse experiences: have you lived in a foreign country? Did you learn a language? Is your hometown rural? Did you grow up on a farm? Were you the leader of a major organization? Have you published a poem? Did you dedicate time and money to improve access to music education for children at your elementary school? Were you awarded employee of the month 12 times at a restaurant you waiter for? Having diverse experiences, like the above, SHOULD be the emphasis if you are not underrepresented in medicine. DO. NOT. Try and “force” diversity upon yourself. I.e, “I am 1/64 Native American.” If you or your parents never knew anything about your great x4 grandma‘s tribe, this is *probably* not something that resonates with who you are! Thus, focus on experiences. For BOTH circumstances, the essay should be written by: 1) Describe the diversity you bring. 2) Briefly explain why you believe this is diverse. 3) State what you learned from your diversity. 4) Wrap it up with why you think their school will foster your diversity. Yes, this essay is hard. But we all bring diversity by just being us! Think about what makes you, YOU!

This year Colorado has seen more precipitation than the past two years combined. Though you’ll hear me complain about it (especially when I’m hiking and it rains, and I forgot my rain jacket) I do my best to continuously remind myself that water is the most important ingredient for all living things. • • • Water is involved in every bodily function from digestion and circulation to the control of body temperature. Water is called the “universal solvent” because it is able to dissolve more substances than any other liquid. This attribute allows it to dissolve the body’s solutes and act as an essential part of many metabolic processes. • • • So I’ve been learning to fully appreciate the rain, and have it be a reminder that I have to provide the rain for my body to thrive.

Kabian Ritter is originally from Orangeburg, South Carolina and earned his BS in Chemistry from Howard University in 2017. He participated in the Evolution and Ecology Graduate Admission Pathways summer program at UC Davis in 2015 and is currently pursuing his PhD in Energy Systems as a part of the first Energy Graduate Group cohort at UC Davis, working with Prof. Jesus Velazquez on designing nanostructured materials for water desalination. Kabian is also a recipient of the prestigious University of California–Historically Black Colleges and Universities Initiative Fellowship! - A key concept of graduate education at UC Davis is the graduate group. Our graduate programs are organized as interdisciplinary graduate groups, giving students intellectual freedom to transcend disciplines and areas of research. While Kabian is technically not a student in the Chemistry Graduate Program, he works with one of our professors who is a member of the Energy Graduate Group. - # & : @ucdavis_chemistry #ourucdavis #ucdavis #chemistry #ucdavischemistry #analyticalchemistry #inorganicchemistry #waterdesalination #stem #uc #hbcu #universityofcalifornia #research #science #gradschool #diversityinstem #thisiswhatascientistlookslike
