It's sea Turtle nesting season here in Florida, and soon, our little cookie sized sea turtle hatchlings will be exploring the deep blue! After hatching, baby sea turtles spend the first few years of their life living amongst a type of floating algae called Sargassum Seaweed (shown here), which is found in abundance just offshore in the Gulf and Atlantic! According to an article in @natgeo this seaweed grows in the Gulf of Mexico and makes it's way on currents to a region of the Atlantic called the Sargasso sea, where it clumps together and nurtures a stunning array of wildlife, serving as a mobile shelter and movable feast! There is no where else on our blue planet that supports such diversity in the middle of the ocean and it's solely because of this seaweed. Sylvia Earle describes it as a golden rainforest, a canopy over the deep blue providing an abundance of life! You can believe that statement when you realize there's are over 122 different species of fish, nudibranchs, crabs, shrimps, snails, as well as all species of sea turtle hatchlings to be found amongst the floating forest, and this array of life attracts even larger marine animals like Mahi Mahi, Wahoo, sharks and even whales! Today, Sargassum is in the news for it's over abundance on beaches and bays across the Atlantic, sometimes piling up to 10 feet high. This, according to National Geographic scientists is likely spurred on by the changes in Climate, and nitrogen enrichment from industrial farming in the midwest, where the pollution travels down the Mississippi into the Gulf, causing the young algae to grow in abundance. I hope you found this interesting! Keep voicing your passion for nature and protecting what you love, friends _______________________________

Another shot of the elegant Goniobranchus annulatus, a common slug here in the shallow waters of Mozambique. This week, these slugs were making love trains. One nudibranch was heading the way, while a second was following very closely, keeping body contact. You can see the second nudy at the back of the first. I do not know why they do this. Does anyone have an idea?

Who would love to meet a wild Dolphin?! This smiling fella is a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), one of the most common dolphin species found in tropical waters across the globe! They are wonderfully intelligent animals with complex social structures that rival our own, with some populations having unique sub-cultures that practice specialized hunting techniques found no where else in the world. Like thousands of other marine species, dolphins depend on healthy #coralreefs for the food they provide and the shelter from erosion the reef supplies to inland environments like grass-beds and mangroves! Today, we all know coral reefs are facing an uncertain future with #climatechange at our doorstep, however, hope is not lost! One organization on a mission to protect the last of the #florida coral reef is the @floridaaquarium which is saving coral from diseases, growing genetically resilient corals and out-planting them to restore the wild reef! For the last five years, the Florida Aquarium has been amassing a "coral arc" filled with thousands of genetically distinct baby corals that could only be found on Florida's reef, and today, with 90% of our stony corals gone, some of these genetics are now extinct in the wild. Recently, the aquarium's Center for Conservation team released over 3,000 Staghorn Coral offspring grown from the arcs back into the waters of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary! Thanks to their efforts, and with the help of passionate individuals, we may one day see a thriving reef similar to the one that Ponce' De Leon experienced when sailing the Caribbean in 1513! So you can get a better idea of what it may have looked liked, I recreated it for you here in this acrylic painting from the "wonders" Trypdk. Inspire hope, share your passion through your talents, and never give up on our future _____________________________________
